About

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, affectionately called the LA Phil by concertgoers, is one of the most forward-thinking symphony orchestras in the country, as beloved by music lovers for its visionary programming as it is for its location in Frank Gehry's iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. Originally founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic emerged from relatively humble beginnings to become one of the world's premier symphony orchestras. Over the years, many notable conductors have led the orchestra, including Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 2003, the LA Phil's popularity spiked after a move from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to Frank Gehyr's sculptural Walt Disney Concert Hall, which boasts world class acoustics and a one-of-a-kind organ designed by the architect. Celebrated young conductor Gustavo Dudamel took the reins in 2009, paving the way for the LA Phil's continued presence at the vanguard of concert music.

Who would have thought a mandolin could be so good

by Borispro on 9/20/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The mandolin for the Vivaldi was above expectations for the piece. The Player had to work extremely hard to get the range he did. Finally, I have to give the sound engineering dept. a hearty thanks for this concert and all. The sound clarity given the mandolin's normal volume was great.

    It's the Hollywood Bowl

by Delmere on 9/19/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

It's the Hollywood Bowl. It's California. It's classic! I don't even like classical music and I enjoyed it. And the women's restrooms are the best.

    Brahms after Vivaldi...?!?

by Anonymous on 9/18/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The performance of The Four Seasons was lovely as expected. Even with the unexpected Mandolin (I've only seen and heard it performed with a violin). But Brahms after it...? I fell asleep!

French Masters at the Hollywood Bowl

by Ekkie on 9/16/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I knew it would be good. Three outstanding composers played by the world's greatest orchestra. What more do you need. Cellist Gautier Capuçon was brilliant and conductor Ludovic Morot did an excellent job. Plus they got to work with the LA Phil. We enjoyed the performance.

Dance at The Bowl- now I know...

by AngeliqueS on 9/12/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Despite the seeming intimacy of this terrific venue, it's not the right place for Dance. Even if there were makeshift wings to cut the widith of the stage- and even if the musicians had been screened off so the dancers did not get lost in a jumble of muscians and instruments- and even if the monitors were bigger- it is simply too vast and open a space to translate Dance in any impactful way. That said, the dance companies were all worth the seeing. Every piece was unique, with inspired moments of choreorgraphy or its execution interspersed-- every dancer more than able, LA Dance Project's corps being the most accomplished and fluid- at least on this night. . Each accompanying musical composition engaging and well matched to movement and ideas. The mystery of the night: why would any Dance-themed program that chooses to close with The Rites Of Spring not include dancers- or- why not even a projected film of the Graham choreography? If the point of the evening is primarily about the LA Phil - and giving them a chance to couple with Dance and draw its audience - you cannot choose a piece of music that is so closely connected to its choreography and then not present any without disappointing half the audience. Lastly, I don't understand why the LA Phil directors never choose to use the enormous speakers hanging over the stage. What is the point of sitting and watching musicians if the music doesn't permeate and envelop the space? Hollywood Bowl Techs- please ramp up the volume - it's a concert, not a dinner party.

I am usually never disappointed by the HB but

by Borispro on 8/28/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Hermann piece was too short; The Horner piece too long & somniferous but well played. Bernstein was great . The Gershwin was about dancing, how about some dancers. Tovey the conductor was pithy and witty. Never order food for a booth at least sushi. The sushi & the bruschetta were terrible. You don't chill sushi, it kills the rice. The toast for the bruschetta's toast was as hard as a rock. Service was fine.

    Beautiful Night, Beautiful Music

by Lorigramster on 8/19/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Another great night of music under the stars at the Bowl. The LA Phil was in great form. I even enjoyed the operatic pieces and I am not an opera fan. My only complaint about the evening is that it ended too soon. And it would have been fun to have some real fireworks along with the Royal Fireworks Music.

    Nice concert

    by Annamaria1970 on 8/16/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I really loved the concert with the fireworks at the end. Only 1 thing is bothering me in Hollywood Bowl that you can eat and drink, you can leave/ arrive during the concert. I always buy box seat and the others are eating loud, munching, talking loud!! I am from Europe, this behavior is not acceptable there, here is very common. Americans should be ashamed but I know that you are proud your garbage attitude and don't care!!!! I am unable to enjoy any concert here because of this, so I do NOT recommend if you are civilized.
