I just bought some Tilson-Thomas SACD Mahler albums just for the sacd then realized how great the performances were. I almost didn't go to the bowl because of the usual reasons: flyovers, audience distractions, distance from orchestra, etc., but I thought I wouldn't have an opportunity for Tilson Thomas and Mahler for at least a while so I went and I'm very glad. There was one helicopter that flew directly over us at low elevation and Tilson Thomas held a note until it was past. The audience was very good. I think the sound was good "considering". Sometimes it seemed that the sound wavered between the orchestra and me and momentarily sounded off key, though I'm sure it wasn't. I'm informed that it's a brand new system and the Times reviewer raved about it. He condemned the video monitors as garish. I thought during the performance it was good since I forgot binoculars, and not garish. It seemed that the performance was excellent except the foregoing comments. I fell in love with the mezzo soprano. I really enjoyed the concert. I knew what I was getting into.
