About

LORRAINE LECKIE IN CONCERT:

As one of New York City's most sought-after modern day troubadours, Lorraine Leckie entrances audiences with her goth-tinged folk rock music and whimsical stage presence. Her music is a mesmerizing mix of poetic lyricism, dramatic delivery, and deliciously gritty style, and it all comes together beautifully in songs that cover everything from devils to prison to blazing guns. In concert she sings with conviction and a sarcastic sense of humor that audiences can't get enough of. Whether she's blending her snarling vocals with the grungy guitars of her longtime rock band Her Demons or the lush violin of her trio Folk Noir trio, Leckie consistently delivers live shows that are compelling and utterly unforgettable.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Singer-songwriter Lorraine Leckie grew up in Toronto listening to The Rolling Stones and Neil Young. In the '70s she discovered punk rock and married Steve Leckie of Canadian punk outfit The Viletones. After the marriage dissolved she began a career as a renowned makeup artist in the fashion industry, boasting a roster of A-list clients including Heidi Klum, Paul McCartney, and Jennifer Lopez. In her late '30s she quit doing makeup, bought a guitar, and began writing and performing her own songs in New York venues like Webster Hall and Bowery Ballroom. She was often joined by Brooklyn-based goth rock band Her Demons, with whom she recorded her debut album, 2008's Four Cold Angels. She followed it up with an acoustic solo EP, 2010's Martini Eyes, which was named the best album of the Year by The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop list. For 2012's Rudely Interrupted LP she collaborated with cartoonist and poet Anthony Haden-Guest, writing original music to accompany his work. Leckie reteamed with Her Demons in 2014 for a new album, Rebel Devil Devil Rebel, and announced plans for another full-length album and a 2015 European tour. Leckie's music is rooted in the folk rock of artists like Neil Young and Patti Smith, but she performs with an exhilarating punk rock spirit, making her a must-see live act.

    Molly Ruth Tells the Truth

by CelticIdiot on 11/15/12Mercury Lounge - New York

The highlight of this evening for me was Molly Ruth, the opening act. She has a majestic voice and the ideas and heart to go with it. Her songs invoke Jungian, tragic imagery haunting every human situation. She's especially good at giving meaning to the rages and pains of love and loss and the struggle for individual freedom in a dark and soul-killing world. Her response to injury and betrayal is to howl and screech bloody murder and become tender and sweet at the most surprising moments. Ms. Ruth is an obviously skilled musician. She can sing and she can play her ax. Mostly she can make us all feel our own ability to love and hate and forgive and prevail. Damn. Props to downtown veteran Lorraine Leckie for giving this new voice a hearing.
