About

Long Beach Symphony Pops Live

Performing more than 100 concerts and events a year, the Long Beach Symphony plays primarily at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center's Terrace Theater, where it premiered in 1978 with a sold-out performance from pianist Van Cliburn. The season comprises a variety of offerings, from classical and POPS! series to family and educational concerts. The diverse repertoire includes works by Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Copland, Beethoven, Brahms and more. The POPS! series sees crossover concerts with music by the likes of Josh Groban, the Rat Pack and George Gershwin. The ensemble has performed with lauded area groups including the Long Beach Camerata Singers, the Jazz Angels and Musical Theater West. A Long Beach Symphony Pops concert is a rousing celebration of classical music in all its crossover forms.

Long Beach Symphony Background

For over 85 years, the Long Beach Symphony has been one of Southern California's greatest regional orchestras. And between its first premiered work in 1939 and the almost two dozen since, the group has sought to support both new and established composers. With music director JoAnn Falletta, who took charge in 1989, the group won the 1998 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. They would go on to win the Long Beach Heritage Preservation Award in 2012. Conductor Eckart Preu took over the reigns of the group in 2017. Before moving to Long Beach, Preu was the music director for the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He also held posts in numerous other cities, leading groups like the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Chile, the Wichita Symphony, and the Jerusalem Symphony, performing at esteemed venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sorbonne in Paris. As part of the Long Beach Symphony's community education initiative, numerous concerts for youth entertain more than 10,000 elementary school children each year.

It's the Closest to ABBA You'll Ever Experience

by Living4Jesus on 2/28/23Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

I arrived about an hour earlier to find my table. The tables were extremely close to the stage. This set of performers for the Arrival from Sweden Franchise were pretty good. They sang some ABBA songs that usually are not on the radio too. I loved being able to have the opportunity to dance on the left and right side of the main stage, which was a major plus for me. The singers sounded very close to ABBA and the guys playing the guitar and piano were very good too. I highly recommend that you get the chance to see Arrival from Sweden when you have the chance. Looking forward to seeing them again soon.

    Uncomfortable Venue

by B on 12/20/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

The Conductor, The Choir and the muse as phenomenal! But the venue was old, dirty and run down. Not the kind of place you picture of going to fourth Symphony. Walking down the steps to our seats I was actually getting a little freaked out. The back of the chairs were so old and worn out and the actual seat that you sit on that fold down were broken. They were hanging down so you sat on a broken seat through the whole show. I left there with back pain. There is Nostalgic and then there is just plain old.

    Another Melodious Evening

by Carol G on 2/26/20Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

I have purchased the 2019-2020 series tickets for Long Beach POPS! Tonite, we were transformed to New Orleans and Jazz, with MARDI GRAS MADNESS. Matt Catingub, the conductor, is ultra-talented - he sings, plays the piano and the sax as he tells stories about the music and his "friends" in the Orchestra. Steve Moretti, the Drummer, has such high energy. He kept the beat going on and on. Then Ginai, brought her Hawaiian "twang" and sang many of the old hits highlighting Mardi Gras and New Orleans. It was another evening of complete entertainment.

    Very enjoyable!!

by Florida friends on 12/25/19Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

We loved it. Our first time to this theatre as we are visiting the area for the holidays. The symphony, conductor and Copa Boys were amazing. Absolutely loved the classic arrangements. Thought we had "nosebleed" seats in section 109, row H but honestly our seats were great especially for the price. Thank you for helping make our holidays in So Cal so special.

    Had a Dreat Time

by G. Brooks on 5/7/19Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

This was a great concert experience which was only heightened by the addition of various performers from Cirque du Soleil. The high artistic level of the orchestra was very enjoyable, and the music was crafted to support and enhance the acrobatic performances. This was my first experience in the Arena, and we were thrilled with our front row balcony seats. I look forward to futurer performances in this venue.

    80's Rewind

by cculver on 3/27/19Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

The show was good, but not what we expected. We expected it to be more symphony based, yet it was more 80's cover band with a symphony back up. It was still good and fun, don't get me wrong, just expected something different.

    Great Music---Bleh Location

by Diggles on 12/30/18Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

While this event was technically at the LB Convention Center, it wasn't in the main part of the building. It was held in an auditorium not very acoustically conducive to enjoying classical music. The Nutcracker was being held at the same time so I guess they got the main hall and this was more like an after though they stuck in a back room. Despite the less than desirable location, the experience was fun and the orchestra performed well.
