From his time with funk legends The Commodores to his celebrated solo career, Lionel Richie has enjoyed a place among the greats of soul and R&B music. With his pop sensibility and immaculate voice, Richie scored some of the biggest hits of the '80s, earning fans around the world with iconic No. 1s like "Hello" and "All Night Long (All Night)." His familiar voice has stood the test of time — Richie sounded as good as ever at his 2013 tour dates, building excitement for his headline billing at the 2014 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, Richie attended Tuskegee Institute on a tennis scholarship before joining the Commodores as a singer and saxophonist in 1968. After cutting their teeth as a support act for the Jackson 5, the band achieved breakout success in the late '70s with a string of hit singles including "Easy," "Brick House," and "Three Times a Lady." Richie left the band in 1982 to release his self-titled solo debut, which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and established Richie as a consummate balladeer with No. 1 hit "Truly." Four more No. 1s and several multi-platinum albums would follow in the '80s, including 1983's Can't Slow Down, which took home the Grammy for Album of the Year. Richie once again topped charts around the world with 2012's Tuskegee, his ninth studio album.
