About

Lila Downs is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez,  who ran away from her village at 19 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a Minnesota-born, Scottish-American film & photography professor, Allen Downs,  who saw her singing and fell in love.  Lila Downs was born in the Oaxacan mountain town of Tlaxiaco, 7,000 feet up in the heavens. The first songs she remembers are her mother singing Lola Beltrán's heartfelt rancheras, and her father singing Woody Guthrie's ''This Land Is Your Land.'' Her border-blurring, multicultural upbringing infused Downs with a firm world view in support of the disenfranchised working classes and an aesthetic vision that embraces cross-cultural pollinations.

As a result Downs has become one of the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music on both sides of the border. Her lyrics are high-minded and sentient and her sound is all encompassing. By drawing on a pan-Latin palette of music as well as American folk, jazz, blues and rock, Downs and her worldly band of kindred spirits, La Misteriosa, have won accolades and a devoted following of world music fans. Known for her smoky voice and magnetic performances, Downs has created a unique body of work that defies categorization in any single genre.

With eight studio albums and one live album released since 1999, Lila Downs has long been recognized by the music industry.  She received a Latin Grammy for the 2004 release “Una Sangre,” and a Grammy nomination for 2008’s “Shake Away,” as well as various performance awards from around the world.  Her 2011 release,  "Pecados y Milagros" garnered both a Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album, and a Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.  It also  hit #1 on the Mexican music charts immediately after its initial release, and reached Double Platinum status there.

In addition to headlining venues all over the world, Lila Downs has performed at major festivals and events including  WOMAD; Live Earth; Montreal Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the World Sacred Music Festival - appearing with such luminaries as the Dalai Lama;  the Latino Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama, the Bicentenario de Mexico, the opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games, and the 2012 Latin Grammys on Univision.

Took my wife to see Lila Downs in San Diego. What a great show. She and her band are so talented, and the dancers were great.

    Quality

    by Mike on 10/23/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Always enjoy Lila Downs concerts with our party of 5 , however this time on October 15,2023 it seemed like it had poor quality compared with other of her concerts and it seemed like the concert was shorter than others, hopefully next time it’s better. Because the tickets are priced high and we expect a better concert !

    Waaaaay too short

    by TMB on 10/20/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

I had never attended a concert that lasted LESS THAN ONE HOUR. It started 15 minutes late, and it lasted about 45 minutes. My group and I were super disappointed, and frankly felt cheated.

    Great, but too short

by New fan on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Lila Downs did not disappoint with her phenomenal and strong vocal cords! Her show was lively and entertaining, and the dancers were great. However, I was disappointed in the length of her show. Granted she didn't take a break and did sing for a full hour and fifteen minutes, but it felt too short for a concert. My ride asked, "you're done already? What kind of a concert was that?!"I felt the same.

    Short Show

    by SE on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

We were looking forward to the concert. It started late and with one encore barley ran for an hour. Given the ticket price we were disappointed with the length of the show. The venue is also adding "service"charges to their bar that they hadn't included before.

    Great performance

    by Lily on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

It was a great show. Lila Downs had me singing and dancing in my chair. It was a good selection of songs. I enjoyed every minute of it and so did my kids.

    Way too short.

    by Me on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Lila was amazing like always, but her show felt rushed. She sang only for 1 hour and 15 minutes . If that pattern continues I won't go to see her again.

    by Moi on 10/19/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Lila downs is the only singer left that is authentic Mexican music singer. We witness a very good concert the last time I heard an authentic singer was when Vicente Fernandez and Rocio durcal came to San Jose Ca. Lila is to me the best women Mexican music singer there is now in Mexico
