Disappointing
by eoped on 3/10/12Library of Congress - WashingtonAfter looking forward to hearing the Fleishers play, the program was a great disappointment with far too small a dose of their talents. Ms. Fleisher played only once, with Mr. Fleisher in a piano 4 hands accompaniment of an excellent group of singers in Brahms "Liebeslieder." Mr. Fleisher had two solos, a virtuoso performance of a Brahms transcription of a Bach chaconne and a hideous piece, an example of the worst in new music, by Dina Koston whose estate recently made a large bequest to LC. The second half was devoted to two works by Ligeti directed by Fleisher (though he did not play). Ligeti is an acquired taste, and while hearing the works once was moderately amusing, I have no desire to again hear either example of the excesses of 1960s modernism. Given the program title, I expected far more solo and duo piano work by the Fleishers, two of the finer pianists currently playing. A final disappointment was the failure of Phyllis Bryn-Julson, listed on the program, to perform. All in all not a great concert experience.
