About

Shattered by their break-up, a woman calls up her ex-lover. Pleading with the voice on the other end of the line, she sinks deeper and deeper into despair. With a touch of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, we watch the scene, and the woman herself, unravel on the other side of a glass wall.

A monologue penned by poet and film director Jean Cocteau in 1927, La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) has inspired numerous retellings on both stage and screen. This new version is by acclaimed Dutch company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, visionary director Ivo van Hove and performed by leading actress Halina Reijn.

With a raw, self-destructive performance by Reijn at its tortured heart, the intensely voyeuristic La Voix Humaine is theatre at its most brutal.

Performed in Dutch with English subtitles.

See this Australian exclusive at Sydney Festival in January 2014.

    Opera Columbus Shines

by Figarooooo on 6/8/15Southern Theatre - Columbus

This is the best Opera Columbus production I have seen in a long time. I think La Voix Humaine was an excellent contrasting choice to pair with i Pagliacci rather than the usual Cavalliera Rusticana. Camille Zamora is an energetic and versatile actress who handled the the roles of Elle and Nedda beautifully. However, it was Clay Hilley who left the lasting impression. His Canio was as creepy as his voice was powerful. I liked how there were no obvious weaknesses in this production. The other leads, the chorus, and the orchestra all sounded good. The staging was well thought out and even the sets and props were of higher quality compared to past productions. The Columbus audience can be irksome at classical concerts, though this crowd was relatively quiet. I'm not too keen on having drinks in the hall as the sound of ice cubes in plastic cups were heard throughout the show.

    La Voix Humaine

What an awesome time. After the event we went and had a few cocktails at the Westin hotel we were staying at and we met some of the actors, the conductor and the director of the theater. Had my picture taken with them. Was great. They all were so nice and outgoing!
