    Hula performers deserved better venue

by SparkyTheGirl on 6/12/18Neal S Blaisdell Exhibition Hall - Honolulu

Venue was totally inappropriate for this kind of event. The cement flooring caused echoes that took away from the music and made the conversations of the attendees overwhelming and distracting. There was a food vendor using a blender which I found incredibly rude. Food and drink were limited to a certain area only (which seemed odd in a venue with cement floors and folding chairs). So with this limitation and allowing vendors to use such noisy equipment, it would've been more logical to only allow food vending at intermission, since there were 3. The acoustics were so bad, we never could understand the emcee. And without a stage, the dancers were only visible to those with front row seating. We stayed for as long as we could, but eventually tired of craning our necks to see some of the event.

    Needs to be promoted/advertised

by PaulKealoha on 6/22/16Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

If you cannot make it to Hilo to watch Merrie Monarch, for $12 for an excellent seat this show was a steal. Beautiful chanting, dancing, music, and culture for both adults and kids. I only found out about this event because I'm on the Ticketmaster email list, otherwise we have never heard of this advertised locally...which is a shame. These artists worked hard and deserve an audience, the venue was barely 1/12 full. Get a Promoter, sell company sponsorships, blast social media...SOMETHING. It's worth seeing but nobody seemed to know about it other than the contestants' families.

This competition is definitely a must for those who love Merrie Monarch. Most of the same halaus that perform at Merrie Monarch, perform in this competition. So you can enjoy the same amazing perfomances but without the heavy cost in ticket prices and travel. I come here every year and love watching all the hard work these halaus put in.

    Terrific Show!

by WasatIty on 6/25/15Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Very enjoyable show, performances were great. It was disappointing to see so many empty seats. Maybe open seating would have been more appropriate. A disappointment was not being able to find out how the performers placed, for people like us who had to leave before they were announced. We found nothing in the local papers or on the internet as to winners of this event.

Unfair....result error at this level of competition is unheard of? I totally understand that errors can take place, but this is ridiculous! They announce the top 5 winners in the female Auana division and distribute all the koa bowls, take pictures and the beautiful 1st place trophy. Minutes later they say there was an error in the results and call all the (1st) winners to the stage to return their awards and re-announce a totally new 5 halau that now "WON" (with the exception of 1 halau...the Japan one that initially took 1st, now received the 5th place award?!) The other 4 halau that were presented awards the (1st) time, did not recieve ANYTHING! They walked away with NOTHING! Shame on the directors, organizers, etc., who allowed this to happen.....what once was a well respected, prestigious competition has not become a JOKE.....Sorry!

unprofessionally ran...alot of halau work so hard on their performances and fundraise to travel to Oahu....impressive judges but process of how they record scores and results need to be looked at? Im not sure many halau will compete next year after this years mix up in the female auana result error. It is already poorly attended! Its a shame because this competition was the biggest thing Hawaii had...once upon a time.
