    Intense emotional experience

by IzzyPickleschwartz on 3/21/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

This is not a musical for the faint of heart, or for those who are looking for a light comedy. This show broached the topics of physical and sexual brutality, discovery of sexual identity, PTSD and its effects on all parts of a relationship, and betrayal and re-birth of trust. With very few exceptions, the singing voices are exceptional. A surprising choice was that the title character doesn't actually sing, perhaps because the idea is that his voice has been lost due to the trauma he has endured. I was stunned by this experience, and was left crying at the end, as I haven't been since I saw Abyssinia years ago. I hope, when this show moves to NYC, that they find a smaller theater so that it doesn't lose its intimacy, and thereby its impact.

    Powerful and quirky

by originalkatnap on 3/16/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

This new show depicts the anxieties of a teenage boy who returns home after nearly a year in captivity by a kidnapper. It's a powerful story with a lot of quirky elements, by Kander and his new partner, Pierce. Pierce is clearly fairly new to writing lyrics, as some of the rhymes are tortured, but the show works. I saw it with my 26-year-old son and we agreed that it spoke to a lot of adolescent universalities. The cast was excellent.

    an adventurous work in progress

by bruzme on 3/13/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Very dark, extremely well acted and plotted but still in need of some adjustments in tone and perhaps length. Not quite sure of the balance between darkness and light (and it can't be relentlessly dark, at least not as a musical if Cabaret and Kiss of Spiderwoman are accurate references) so I hope that when this moves to NYC (and it should) it will be a tighter show. But absolutely worth seeing in its current incarnation and 3 cheers for an original show based on an original concept with an original score!

Kid Victory - Heavy Topic But Important Show To Se

by Durgis on 3/10/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Kid Victory, performed as a musical, explores a heavy, multi-sided and usually unspoken topic with unusual depth and clarity. The authors (and actors) introduce some great music, and enough light humor, to keep the story line moving. I think it would be difficult to see this performance and not be emotionally moved by the realistic situation presented in the show. I saw the show three days ago, and continue to go through the scenarios in my head. A powerful drama that should be seen by lots of people. A great performance.

An extremely well done, unique play that grapples with tough, uncomfortable but real topics.

    Worst show ever

    by Robbie1969 on 3/4/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

It's a bizarre musical about child abuse, pedophilia, and bashing religious people. The music is pretty awful, totally forgettable, and the story is flat out offensive and sick. Really hated it and I've seen lots of great shows at this theater. Wish I had not seen it.

    Strong, powerful, and sometimes funny.

by LambentServices on 2/23/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

Kid Victory is a play about a challenging subject - trauma, attachment, and growing up. It still works very well as a musical, even though it felt watching it like it was a drama/musical. The cast is outstanding, especially lead Jake Winn. It was original, true, and I loved it. Highly recommend.

Kid Victory--Best New Musical I have Seen

by LoganDC on 2/20/15Signature Theatre - Arlington

if you enjoy being challenged by theatre, you must go see Kid Victory. I have not stopped thinking about this coming of age story. This show is filled with hope and focuses on how one boy breaks free from the literal and metaphorical chains that bind him. The cast is strong and the score is amazing. Go see this show!
