About

KAWEHI IN CONCERT:

Hawaiian singer-songwriter Kawehi became a viral sensation in 2014 when a video of her covering Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" became so popular that even Courtney Love gave it a thumbs up. The widely shared clip featured Kawehi with her signature setup -- a looping station, a midi keyboard, and her soulful voice -- and showed her building the song piece by piece by combining skillful beatboxing, hummed backing tracks, and her powerful vocals. It's a formula she recreates to fantastic effect at her one-woman live shows, where she performs her own songs and covers with the energy and virtuosity of a full band. Whether she's treating ticket buyers to a seamless mashup of Gotye and Britney Spears or playing lush originals like "Anthem", Kawehi always impresses with her gorgeous voice, unfiltered lyrics, and creative arrangements.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kawehi ("the song" in Hawaiian) was born and raised in Honolulu, where she grew up taking piano lessons and playing the ukulele. She began writing and performing her own songs in high school, and after graduating she moved to LA to record a demo with a band she had successfully auditioned for. The project was short lived, and the city's high cost of living led her to relocate to Kansas shortly after. It was there that she started raising money for her music using crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Her quirky promo videos and charismatic online persona helped her raise funds for three EPs, an impressive feat that earned her the nickname "The Kickstarter Darling". Since then she has performed at the 2013 TED Conference, released hugely popular covers of songs by Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails, and racked up millions of views with her creative music videos. In 2014 Kawehi became an overnight internet sensation when her cover of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" went viral. She further expanded on her newfound fame a few months later with the Robot Heart EP, a stellar collection of songs that drew her out on tour and generated plenty of attention from industry execs.

Best artistic use of technology I've seen!

by CharlieNJ5321 on 4/25/16Mercury Lounge - New York

I stumbled across Kawehi browsing the web and thought she was just playing pre-recorded loops - then I saw how she was creating them on-the-fly and really deconstructing the essence of the music! Now she's added originals! Truly she has a unique talent.

    Kawehi fst forward

by okuhy on 3/29/15Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom - Fort Lauderdale

This was pretty good performance for Kawehi. Even though she was a little nervous but the audience was nervous too. The music that Kawehi plays are good for parties and clubs where people drink a little and have less focus than normal small concert where everyone look at the artist and listen what she has to say. That's was the vibe of this show: she tried to relax herself with occasional sip of the beer and smile and tell some little jokes. Although there was not much feedback from the people in the room. There was an open bar with drinks that would cost you more than a ticket to the show. May be that's why not everybody had an opportunity to have their glass of wine or bottle of beer. Kawehi is very talented musician. She does her "looping" thing very well and it is amazing to see how she does it live. I definitely recommend to go to her concert if she is around if you like her music. I encourage you to find her music videos on youtube before the concert so you know what to expect.

    Kawehi "Live" Amazing

by Tepano on 3/29/15Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom - Fort Lauderdale

Fellow Hawaiian Kawehi (she's from Oahu originally) did a great show. Highly recommended. Her viral videos showing her singing, playing loop and keyboards, sitting with her dogs on her bed, was just the start. This young fresh artist has evolved to level of pure entertainment. Kawehi's live show is a great demonstration of both technical and artistry skill. She creates loops of sound live each night which shows not only a wonderful "finished" product of sound but also the creative process. Her music layers instrument, voice and concocted sound, looped into a flowing rhythm. Beyond the beats, the music and the technology is a wonderful person with a real joy for performance and audience interaction. How many performers take and distribute selfies with their audience? Watch her videos and then go see Kawehi (pronounced "KA-Vay-Hee) live. You won't regret the experience. And it is an experience, not just a concert. Mahalo Kawehi!

Kawehi will blow your mind all by herself

by Silvermix on 1/12/15Brighton Music Hall - Boston

When I bought my ticket for kawehi's show I didn't know what to expect. I had seen her YouTube and vimeo videos but I wasn't sure how it was going to translate to a full show. I have to say I shouldn't have worried at all. The whole show was amazing, from her cover of Closer, to her original songs and her mashups. The best of all is that she stayed until the last person had a chance to talk to her. I would definitely recommend that you go see her if you have a chance.
