Great to have Kathleen Edwards back even if just for a night
After a 4 year hiatus, Kathleen Edwards moved backbone concert to America and gave a fun, intimate concert at Birchmere in Va. as Part of the Canada 150 celebration. Sang tunes from all her CDs as well as a few new ones and a cover two.
If Neil Young and Lucinda Williams had a kid, it would be Kathleen Edwards. Of course, the kid would have to develop the edginess that can only come with touring in a Chevy Suburban for a year. There's absolutely no pretentiousness in her music or her show. Every song is a story, and not all of them are happy ones. But they're all masterfully told, and Edwards holds nothing back in the telling. She throws straight from the shoulder, and it's a knockout every time. She's fierce, but not at the expense of being closed off -- something that was enhanced by seeing her in a small venue. She engages with the audience, makes them part of the performance, and doesn't insult their intelligence. There's an honesty in Edwards' music and in her performance that if you don't love it, you may be intimidated by it. But you won't fail to respect it. Even if she is a Leafs fan. ;-)
Such a terrific show. Was just Kathleen with Jim Bryson and Gord Tough, each on guitar, and Jim handled keyboard now and then. Sera Cahoone joined for percussion on Back to Me and Change the Sheets. Last song Sidecar they performed off-mic at the front edge of the stage. Kathleen Edwards is so rocking great, people. You really should totally love her.
Great songs. Stunning voice. All from the heart. Catch her if you can!
We love Kathleen and have been following her when she comes to the Birchmere. We couldn't help but pick up on her extreme sadness this time. Even her band mates didn't seem too happy to be there. We will see her again, but hope she is more upbeat next time.
Kathleen Edwards was phenomenal. Her amazing songwriting, and musical ability is outstanding. come back soon!
First time seeing Edwards live, and was not disappointed. Flawless musicality and vocals of both her and her band members with wonderfully emotive performances. Show tastefully peppered with hilarious stories and sassy banter with crowd members. Fantastic!
Well-worth seeing. Both moving lyrics and voice. See her at a small venue while you still can.
