Kansas City Royals History

Kansas City Royals joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team for the American League in 1969. They succeeded early, winning three consecutive AL West titles from 1976 to 1978 and advancing to the World Series for the first time in 1980. Kansas City won its first World Series title in 1985 after coming back down 3 games to 1 twice in the postseason. The Royals secured back-to-back AL Pennants in 2014 and 2015, with the latter run resulting in the team’s second World Series victory.

The Royals have eight former players in the Hall of Fame, including 1980 AL MVP George Brett. The team has featured two-time Cy Young winner Bret Saberhagen, four-time Silver Slugger Salvador Pérez and four Rookie of the Year selections. Kansas City was also the team that drafted baseball and football phenom Bo Jackson, who simultaneously played for the Royals and the NFL’s Los Angeles Raiders in the late ’80s.
