This was the saddest and most disappointing concert I have ever attended in more than 60 years of going to classical music concerts. It appeared as though the keyboardist had never, ever seen the music before. Mistakes, hesitations, and just plan bad playing marked the entire evening. I would have given this zero stars, but there was no such option. Such a shame.
A fine program including infrequently heard works by C.P.E. Bach, Handel, and Haydn made the evening worthwhile, especially for the singing of Ms. Baird. The harpsichord and fortepiano solos, on the other hand, were barely up to undergraduate recital standards. Ms. de Silva is an uninspiring performer, wooden and seemingly interested only in hitting the right notes, investing little personality or sense of artistry into her mechanical renditions of the various harpsichord and fortepiano solos on the program, a wan imitation of the master harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock who performed at LC a year ago. Well known for her command of the baroque repertoire, Ms. Baird was engaging and lively whenever she sang, even accompanied by a less than sympathetic Ms. de Silva. Her singing made the evening worthwhile, and with another accompanist it could have been excellent.
Intense, sensitive, and incredible performance. Preethi de Silva and Ms. Baird are a perfect pairing interpreting the music as one soul.
