I never had the pleasure of hearing Joshua Redman in person. I always liked his recordings, but honestly he was not one of my favorite saxophonists (I play sax also, so I listen to a lot of sax players).
After hearing him live, that has changed. His control of volume in low, high, and altissimo registers with nearly flawless intonation alone is very impressive. His solos definitely tell a story, as he masterfully builds on any type of song into a roaring, jaw-dropping moment.
The vocalist, Gabrielle Cavassa has the most beautiful attack and release of every single note. It must take an incredible amount of effort to sound so effortless. Absolutely beautiful!
I don’t mean to slight the rest of the band. Every player was excellent, and I enjoyed both their solos and their interplay while comping for solos.
I went to both sets at Jimmy’s in NH, and I hope to hear them again!
