About

For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

    Still Alive and Well

by TeddyBrooklyn on 8/21/14B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

I saw Johnny when he brought Muddy Waters back to the masses in a 1977 show at the Palladium in NYC. The pure joy of Johnny and James Cotton and the pagentry of bringing out the great Muddy Waters was a revelation to me. Started playing the Blues and never looked back. I went to see Johnny 4 times on this last tour and two of the nights were a reminder that he was one of the true greats even at 70. True to the Blues really says it all. I can't wait for the new release September 2 or the memorial concert and documentary screening October 10. Johnny Winter will live on in everyone he touched with those Texas Blues he ripped like nobody else.

Johnny Winter - Raisin' Cain !

    by 11444l on 8/3/14The Grove - Anaheim

I had not missed a Johnny Winter since I first saw him, at the San Diego Sports Arena, a very large venue, that he headlined in 1976. I last saw him this April in Beverly Hills, to which I remarked to my wife "...he really looks in better health, than in the last several years..." We went to the Rock N' Blues Fest, in Anaheim last Friday, which was billed as the Johnny Winter tribute Fest. i will really miss this guy...even at his worst...he was a Gift From God

    Johnny has Left Us

by Anonymous on 7/19/14All recent Shows - Where the shows were at

Well, This isn`t exactly a review as it is a possible explanation for a lot of the recent Bad Reviews of Johnny Winter`s shows. I see some terrible reviews of the 6-20-14 show in the Dakota`s. As most people know Johnny has been very Ill recently so much so that it caught up to him. Johnny Passed away on 7-16-2014 not too very long after that show in the Dakota`s everyone felt was sub-standard. I`m willing to believe it was as well but there was a reason for it...his ill health. I was privileged to have seen Johnny at his very best and wish everyone remember him that way and possibly give him a pass on several of the most recent shows when you felt you were being cheated. After all he did show up and make an effort not wanting to let you down he did the best he physically could under the circumstances. Please try to give Johnny a Pass...he truly is one of the Blues Legends. RIP Johnny 7-16-14

A Legend Afraid To Be Heard

by JLMandan on 6/30/14Belle Mehus Auditorium - Bismarck

Johnny Winter is still a connection to the early blues (e.g., Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, etc...) and rock of the late 60s. He can still play and his band mates were topnotch, but the sound was too loud and muddled as they tried to cover his mistakes. I understand he's 70 years old and his voice isn't what it used to be and his fingers don't always hit clean notes; and I can live with that. Please turn down the volume, put Johnny front and center and let that rough voice and slide guitar be heard. Don't cover him up, let him shine like the gem he's always been. It's not the speed of his playing or the range of his voice that first caught our attention, it was the soul he put into his music. Play some slow blues filled with emotion, and whatever mistakes he makes will just add to the experience.

    WE WALKED OUT!!!

by farmdoc on 6/29/14Belle Mehus Auditorium - Bismarck

Yes, It was THAT BAD!!!! We have never heard such a MOSH of noise, is th only way I can think of to describe it. Could not stand it. Had to leave. It was the sound system mix or the musicians or their instruments, but the vocals were totally undecipherable as well. Could not understand a word. Expected MUCH better, as the show we saw at this facility just a couple of weeks earlier, the sound system was perfect. A storyteller, so the microphones for vocals and sound system had to be. Understood every word, music was perfect. So what went wrong? Either the BAND was that bad or somebody screwed up the sound system...THAT BAD !!! We are hippies and old rockers. Have NEVER walked out on a show before. EVER! Buyer beware. WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK! But we know that is not going to happen. And that is NOT why this review. This is real! It WAS THAT BAD.

    Needs to give it !

by KriSCHI on 6/23/14Belle Mehus Auditorium - Bismarck

We should of left when they had to help Johnny Winters on to the stage just so he could sit down. He didn't acknowledge the audience once, not even eye contact. The rest of the band was babysitting him throughout the concert, helping him with what song they were going to play and when to start and when to finish. We left early and were just depressed by the whole experience.

    Simply Amazing

by Tommyboy1967 on 4/5/14Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

If and /or when an artist is still playing their music on tours and TV shows at 70 years old (like Johnny Winter is) the question remains WHY is he still doing it. Its not about the fame (he's already had that), its not about the money (he's got that too), and its certainly not about the Fad of the day (he was once very popular with the young'ns) so why isn't he at home with his family and enjoying the rest of his life? He IS enjoying his life! Its about the MUSIC! The minute its NOT about the music then its time to retire. Johnny Winter proved my statement by the simple fact that he's still doing it at 70 and shows no sign of retiring from his current WORLD tour. The bottom line is, if you're into the fad of the day that you'd hear on the top of the pop charts at the moment ,then Johnny Winter is NOT for you but of you like American blues played with ferociousness and at the same time lustfully simple then Johnny Winter is your cup of tea. From the moment the band started playing and Joe Perry of Aerosmith introducing him to the last song, it was a total blast! The only not enjoyable part was the P.A. sound. We couldn't hear Johnny's voice or the lyrics to the songs.
