    Great Time

by Lover of Dance on 11/5/19Detroit Opera House - Detroit

We had a great time at the Joffrey Ballet. The venue was beautiful and the performance was unique, elegant, and beautiful. The perfect mixture of ballet with a touch of modern dance.

    Not what I expected

by chatterz on 3/16/15Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

The dancing was not stellar. The music was techno and rather repetitive and annoying. I think I could have put up with the music if I'd felt the dancing was better. We left at the second intermission, so we missed "Episode 31.". The program started with "Incantations" and after an intermission "Son of Chamber Symphony." I wish they'd started with something more classical to draw me in, however, perhaps they were trying to draw in a younger crowd. If so, then maybe they succeeded? Neither of the two pieces I saw seemed to have a story line. They were just movements put together in a sequence without any meaning. The knee pads that the men wore were distracting from the clean lines that I like to see during a ballet performance. Also, some of the dancers wore big smiles and others were deadpan. There was not a consensus even amongst themselves as to what they were presenting.

    DISAPPOINTING

by IKEC2 on 3/14/15Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

As a long time fan of the Joffrey, I was not enamored of the selections chosen, which in my opinion, did not exhibit the precision and artistry that is their trademark.

The Joffrey Ballet performed three dances of about 25 minutes each, with two intermissions. While some of the moves were those found in traditional ballets, most were more unusual. Sometimes the dancers were in synch, but often multiple dances were going on simultaneously. The precision was incredible. The costumes were also different from the traditional. The choreography of the final dance was fascinating and the performance amazing. The dance was introduced with a video of the troupe in their Chicago studio, then dancing around the city, both narrated by various dancers, before raising the curtain to dance live on stage. I recommend this show to everyone, not only ballet fans.

    Topnotch Joffrey

by Deserttrekker on 3/26/14Centennial Hall - Tucson

I attended performances of the Joffrey Ballet many years ago when I lived in Chicago. I love classical ballet but I also love seeing these classically trained dancers performing in modern ballets. Their program was so varied but each segment wonderful!
