The show had three pieces by three different choreographers and all three were very good. From the amazing costumes, to the use of different kinds of lighting and shadows, to the use of fog the pieces were great. The piece by the female choreographer was hands down best done and best executed by the dancers.
I've been watching the Joffrey grow into being an absolute fierce competitor for first place in the make believe contest for "best" ballet company in the U.S. In my opinion--the two amazing companies from New York and the great one from San Francisco and The Joffrey are now at THE TOP We are so very lucky to have them here in Chicago.
Wonderful evening. Great venue. There was not a live orchestra. There was a live three piece for the last act only and it made a big difference. Recorded music, simple costumes, and a stripped down set design for the first act gave it a dance recital feel. Overall there was a feeling that the production was made for ballet enthusiasts and for the self-gratification of the creators. Heavily muddled or non existant story lines and excessive use of abstract themes made it hard for the cursory ballet ticket holder to be emotionally vested in the performers. The dancers talent was exraordinary. The production was not.
Being transported to another realm by the beauty and exquisite finesse of the Joffrey dancers in the three wonderfully choreographed ballets under the title "Millennials" was mind boggling. Crazy how the costumes, lighting and minimal sets added so much to the dances. Slick, fluid tableaux in all three ballets.
