Enjoyed the show and really enjoyed the intimate setting
I really enjoyed the music, but also liked his stories, particularly about the Fifth Ward in Houstion.
Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Joe Sample, both as a solo artist and during his time with the Jazz Crusaders, and I really enjoyed his performance. My only slight critique is that Joe is a folksy guy who tends to ramble on in his story-telling, and it takes valuable time away from hearing him perform songs. The Birchmere is a great and intimate venue to hear this type of performance (and the food and service is top notch), but they run a tight schedule and the performances (which usually start promptly at 7:30) must be over before 9:30 so that they can clear the place and parking lot out and meet the city ordinance limit of 10:00. Because of this fact, it is important for the artists to be thrifty with their commentary (I do understand and appreciate a little banter between songs, but not 10 minutes of stories before each song) so that we can truly get the full musical performance that we came for. I wholeheartedly recommend seeing Joe Sample live, especially in a small and intimate venue like the Birchmere, but I would hope that Joe would read my critique and shorten his stories so that concert goers can get the full benefit of his musical genius !
Joe Sample is a true musician. Enjoyed every minute of the concert.
Show was amazing. His showmanship is phenomenal. I highly recommend to everyone .
Mr. Sample was spectacular!!!! Cannot recommend ever missing him when he comes to town..That was and is one of the best concerts I have been to in forever!!
Joe Sample was fabulous! He played the piano, his son played the bass, and another guy played the drums, and they made you hear a whole orchestra! This was good old fashioned jazz in its purist form. He played and talked about his life and his music, and he gave us insight into who he is and it was wonderful! I am so glad that I went to see and hear Joe Sample and if he is playing near where I am, I'll make it my business to see him!
An hour and a half show that cost over $60.00 - it was not a good value. Joe is great but the tickets were pricey. The seating was crowded also.
Joe was great, as always...2 hours of music and stories
