About

JOANNA NEWSOM IN CONCERT:

Over the past decade indie folk icon Joanna Newsom has parlayed her idiosyncratic sound into Top 40 success, an impressive feat for a classically trained harpist whose unique compositions incorporate everything from Appalachian music to avant-garde modernism. Newsom’s songwriting is at once accessible and stunningly complex, taking familiar sounds and structures and turning them on their heads to reveal delightful new dimensions. She’s a master harpist and a skilled multi-instrumentalist, and her live shows are virtuosic recreations of her painstakingly crafted songs that treat ticket buyers to an up-close-and-personal look at her compositional process. As she plucks out elaborate passages on the harp with breathtaking dexterity, Newsom casts her acrobatic voice over fans, enveloping them in a brilliant and charming world of poetic lyrics and emotional melodies. An acclaimed performer revered for her originality and unparalleled musicianship, Newsom is a must-see performer for fans of classical, folk, and pop alike.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

California-born Joanna Newsom’s parents shielded her from TV and radio as a child, but she was exposed to music from a young age nonetheless –her father played guitar and her mother was a classically trained pianist. Newsom took up piano at age 5 and began playing harp shortly after, receiving her first full-size pedal harp in seventh grade. After high school she studied composition at Mills College before dropping out to focus on music full time, and in the early ‘00s she released two EPs of her early work, 2002’s Walnut Whales and 2003’s Yam and Glue. The releases caught the ear of alt folk star Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), who promptly invited Newsom on tour and passed her music on to his label Drag City. She signed with the label and released her 2004 debut album The Milk-Eyed Mender, an acclaimed collection that led to tours with Devendra Banhart and Vetiver. Her ambitious 2006 sophomore album Ys was an even bigger critical success, charting on both sides of the Atlantic and landing on numerous year-end lists thanks to its imaginative songwriting and unique arrangements. Since then she’s continued to impress with her masterful performances on tour and her beloved recordings, which include 2010’s rave-reviewed LP Have One on Me and her fourth album Divers, which cracked the mainstream Top 40 in both the US and the UK in 2015.

    Joanna is magical!!

by Joannalover on 9/14/16Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

I had been waiting for YEARS for her to come anywhere near Florida on a day where I could make the trip, and I finally was able to for this Atlanta show. There are no words that can do justice to how beautiful and moving it was to see her and her band in person. Their musicianship and talent are on another level. It was easily the best concert I have ever been to and I will say it is a MUST to see her live if you are able to.

Brilliant from start to finish. It took a while to begin, but once it did, it was whirlwind of harp, piano, and of course, her signature voice. Anecdotes, in particular, took my breath away, and the encore, Baby Birch, had me in tears. Highly recommended.

Joanna Newsom's new live instrumentation is killer

by Krakentastic on 3/30/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I try to catch Joanna Newsom whenever she happens to play near here, and have seen a few different band lineups, and I have to say, this one is really really solid. It was a real treat to hear so many things form Y's! Really the only thing I missed was I still have yet to hear her play Only Skin live.

    What a great show.

by Scott on 3/30/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

We were tired. Our landlord gave us notice, we were rush packing for a move, it was Easter so we took time off to play with our daughter ... but we had these tickets on will call, and despite life getting in the way, we dragged ourselves across the Bay to the show. And we were so glad we did, and we remembered what a great stage presence she has, this time with an even larger group of supporting musicians.

    "You bring peace to us"

by Anonymous on 3/30/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

A truly amazing show. Robin Pecknold opened, and his songwriting remains as consistent as ever. Even more, his voice continues to improve, and is now quite incredible. Then came Joanna Newsom with a full band (many of whom were other Newsoms!). She played an amazing collection from all four album. The crowd was absolutely mesmerized throughout the whole show. It was probably the best show that I have ever been to. Seeing Joanna Newsom live is best explained by a comment yelled from someone way up in the balcony: "You bring peace to us!"
