About

Singer, songwriter, and natural history enthusiast Jenny Owen Youngs grew up in the forests of northern New Jersey and is now based in Los Angeles. She has released three albums and a handful of EPs, both independently and via Nettwerk Records, and her songs have been heard on Bojack Horseman, Weeds, Grey's Anatomy, Suburgatory, and more. These days she spends much of her time writing with and for other artists including Ingrid Michaelson, Pitbull, Shungudzo, and Brett Dennen. She recently co-wrote the latest Panic! at the Disco single “High Hopes,” and will be releasing a new EP, Night Shift, this year.

Jenny also hosts two podcasts: BUFFERING THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, a Buffy rewatch podcast that she co-hosts alongside LGBT activist & author Kristin Russo, which features an original recap song for every episode, and has been named on "Best Podcasts" lists by Time, Esquire, and BBC America; and VERONICA MARS INVESTIGATIONS, in which Jenny and Helen Zaltzman (celebrated host of podcasts The Allusionist and Answer Me This) hold a magnifying glass to every episode of Veronica Mars, from the beginning.

Hilarious and touching, with some catchy tunes like Gravitron.

    Aunt Martha was super!

by Kikwe on 4/10/12Mercury Lounge - New York

Despite the cold begining and short performance Jenny Owen offered to the audience, Aunt Martha's perfomance was really good. They really were able to warm the atmosphere.

    Aunt Martha Amazing/Jenny technical trouble

by balkfan1240 on 4/1/12Mercury Lounge - New York

I thought a 4 hour show would be daunting, especially since I was really only there to see Jenny. I'd listened to some Aunt Martha before the show and was excited to see them however. Gregory and the Hawk was really great. She was super cute, had a really great voice. Simple pretty songs. Aunt Martha blew me away, every song was fully of energy, the crowd was loving them. Lyrics, the lead's voice, and the diversity of the material was just brilliant. I'm definitely a fan of their's now. Their stuff is catchy and well written. I love Jenny to death, and think she's amazing, but I was up in the very front and had to move to the back after she opened. Her amp or speakers or something was hot. Everything was loud. I couldn't hear her voice, only the guitar and annoying noises coming from the speakers. Also, she definitely decided to be a rock girl that night. She only played electric guitar. Part of what I like about her is that she does so many different things. I like a lot of her beautiful slow songs. She didn't play any of those. She didn't focus on her vocals, mainly belting or screaming out lyrics... which led to a certain kind of show. A rock show. Which is cool I guess but I felt like I was missing something.

Jenny, Jenny, you're the girl for me

    by SunnyMusic323 on 11/5/10Grog Shop - Cleveland

Jenny Owen Youngs' music has a striking dichotomy of assonant guitar parts and mellow vocals coupled with frequently angry, sometimes morbid but always honest lyrics. So it should be no surprise that her performance was covered in F-bombs, and seeming apathy but also a true connection with her audience. Her humor is not for everyone, but if you like obviously intellectual, but stream-of-consciousness (and sometimes incoherent) candidness, you'll love her performance style. Lowly the tree ghost was a bit mechanical in their performance, but was musically interesting at times, flashing some unexpected Irish influences and fun instrumentation including a harmonica and fiddle. The luminous Ashley Brookes Toussant nailed her performance with skillful vocals and insightful lyrics.
