Jenny Hval uses minimal ingredients to achieve maximal results at her expressionist art rock concerts. Her looping keyboard patterns form a basic outline as drummer Kyrre Laastad and guitarist Havard Volden flesh out each stunning composition with a mix of rock aggression and ambient soundscapes. These spacious arrangements allow Hval's powerful voice to take center stage, bringing greats like Bjork, Patti Smith, and Sandy Deny to mind. Her angelic voice and provocative lyrics combine to create a mesmerizing stage presence that pulls the audience into her intimate world with each evocative word and vocal flourish. Touring in support of 2015’s Apocalypse, girl, Jenny Hval invites ticket buyers to watch her gracefully orchestrated art unfold in real time at her acclaimed live shows.
Jenny Hval was born in 1980 in Oslo, Norway, where she sang in her first band Shellyz Raven throughout her teens. After studying creative writing and performance at the University of Melbourne, Australia, she returned to Oslo and began recording under the name Rockettothesky. Her 2006 debut EP Cigar was nominated for a Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian equivalent to The Grammys) for Best Newcomer. After releasing two well-received full-length albums, she dropped her alias and released 2011’s Viscera under her birth name. Her rise continued in 2015 thanks to tours with St. Vincent and Perfume Genius that helped her reach a wider American audience. While she focuses primarily on her jaw-dropping live performances and brilliantly orchestrated albums, Hval also published the critically acclaimed novel Perlebryggeriet in 2009.
