Chubby Checker has still got it! At 74 years young, he can still twist with the best of them. He put on a very entertaining show. In contrast, Jay Black was very disappointing. My husband and I have seen him over a dozen times, and he has always put on an amazing show. I wish we had read some recent reviews. He looked awful, having lost a great deal of weight due to illness, but still wearing the same baggy clothes. He said his doctor had recommended he not perform due to a broken windpipe, but apparently he has been saying this for a year. He only did a handful of songs, barely making it through on his infamous Cara Mia. His guitar player did a couple of songs to take up the slack. I think it would be best for Jay to retire with some dignity, and not continue to take peoples' money while returning a poor performance.
He is called "The Voice" for a good reason. In all the years he has been singing, his voice remains umpecable, just, THE VERY BEST!
My wife and I have heard Jay perform 4 times in the last year. We heard him at the Music Hall in Tarreytown, N.Y., the Tilles Center in N.Y., the Bergen performing Arts Center and, most recently, the Mohegan Sun in Ct. While Jay has been battling some medical difficulties (with his windpipe, I believe), he is truly one of the legendary voices of rock and roll, that stand up there with Roy Orbison, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and a few others. Although some of his performances have not been as sharp as others, Jay Black at less than perfect is still better than most singers at 100%. His voice is so powerful and he can transition from low notes to high notes with such ease that it is a thrill to hear him perform. His performances are not long- about 45-60 minutes. But to hear him do Cara Mia, Some Enchanted Evening and Walking in the Rain is awesome. We have also heard Jay Black #3 who performs with Jay & The Americans. While they are good, Jay Black #3 does not have the "easy" power that Jay has. For Jay, it just comes naturally. We will continue to go hear him whenever possible.
We drove quite a distance to see the show, as my husband is a HUGE fan! We booked a hotel overnight so as not to have to drive home late. So between the tickets and the hotel, it was a fairly expensive night for us! To Jay's credit, he went on with the show despite saying that he was not feeling well. But his voice was not up to par and he only performed for an hour. We still love Jay but were disappointed with the show.
Jay Black has one of those voices that only comes along once in a while. Not only is he a great singer but he is quite funny. I go to see him wherever he appears in the tri-state area.
I loved the concert with Jay Black but he was not up to par. He was not himself but not because he was not trying. I was due to his health issues. He did the best he could with what he had to work with. I still loved the show.
Jay struggled due to throat issues.....not one of his best shows.
His voice is incredible. He told the crowd he had a throat problem, but we could not tell. He is so personable and I was so glad to finally see him as I have been a fan since day one.
I have been traveling from New Jersey to Westbury for many years, sometimes twice a year, to hear Jay Black sing and make me laugh on his home turf. Westbury is where Jay is most at home, and he is funnier there than at any other venue. Although Jay had a damaged windpipe and was told by his doctor not to sing or talk, he didn't want to disappoint his fans at Westbury. Because of this problem he was having, it was not his best show, but it was certainly understandable. We all still loved seeing and hearing him. This is the music I grew up on, and it is great music! It brings back so many great memories. I am very grateful that Jay is still performing and bringing us these magic moments! I do miss when Jay's son Beau would appear with him, especially the duets they did together. I wish Beau would make an appearance at the next show.
