The lead female role was too old for the role. I found it distracting.

    Lovely, but long

by Katielen on 9/11/13Royal George Theatre - Chicago

I first attended the lecture beforehand which I feel could have been orchestrated better. It was in the back room - first come, first seated. Because of the lack of chairs for the event it was distracting as many were looking for seats or chatting in the back of the little theatre. I feel the doors should have been closed to those who didn't care to make it to the lecture on time. I arrived well before the lecture began and had my seat, which I was asked to move from, and did, three times AFTER the lecture began for seniors. Senior or not, they should arrive on time. That was not coordinated right, I feel. The play itself was good, but drawn out... It was so thoroughly thought out to every detail in the story of Persuasion, but I feel a bit of it could have been condensed. The first act did drag on a bit whereas the second act was lovely and kept my attention throughout. They could have cut a half hour off the show without losing quality and content. The lead was clearly a professional, but her voice is soft. The orchestra playing even light music over her narrative made it very hard to both hear and understand her. Overall a good play, but I would not see it again.

    Persuasion

by MiddleRiddle on 9/11/13Royal George Theatre - Chicago

Most the the afternoon was enjoyable. But I had a hard time understanding the lead's "British accent" at times, especially at the beginning, and I did not care for her voice or her father's voice. They had such a wide vibrato that it was hard to tell what note they were singing. The other leads were younger and had very nice voices. I am a Jane Austen fan, so I enjoyed hearing the story once again. I came early to hear the lecture--the speaker was funny and very knowledgeable. And parking is free in Chicago on Sundays, so that was a perk!

Persuasion is now ruined for us.

by Austenlovers2 on 9/10/13Royal George Theatre - Chicago

We walked out after the first act! The singing was terrible (with few exceptions). We had much higher expectations for something labeled "Chicago Chamber Opera". The acting overall with few excepetions, especially Anne, was overdone and affected. It doesn't say much for this production when the tap dancers stole the show. The writing of the songs was amateurish and the syntax often did not match the rhythm. We also strongly felt that the songs detracted greatly from the story instead of enhancing it. Don't go and see this production!
