JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW IN CONCERT:

Genre-bending Irish musician James Vincent McMorrow is a master of stirring up emotion, combining haunting vocals and beautifully sparse arrangements to stunning effect on his swelling compositions. While his 2010 debut fit relatively comfortably in the realm of indie folk, 2014's Post Tropical is another story, combining elements of R&B, hip hop, and electronica on subtly layered productions that evade genre categorization. And then there's that voice — a falsetto that's certainly broken a few hearts, as flooring in live concert as it is on record. Already a revered live performer in Europe, Morrow has North American audiences eagerly awaiting his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ireland's James Vincent McMorrow picked up the guitar at 19, developing an idiosyncratic singing and songwriting style that he claims owes much to female artists of the '70s due to the lofty pitch of his voice. After cutting his teeth performing in local pubs, McMorrow isolated himself in a coastal cabin to record his debut, 2010's Early in the Morning. The album was a hit, garnering positive reviews, a No. 1 chart position, and platinum certification from the RIAA. In 2011, McMorrow's cover of Steve Winwood's '80s gem "Higher Love" brought him even more attention, getting picked up for a popular British ad campaign. With the 2014 release of sophomore album Post Tropical, McMorrow unveiled a new stylistic direction, once again climbing the charts and embarking on an international tour.

    Mcmorrow is a genius

    This was James first show in Columbus Ohio and it seems that he may have justly won over a new city with his masterfully constructed songs and his mesmerizing vocals. He brought his whole band with him but played a few tracks solo. A simple light show was well synchronized and provided a wonderful visual aspect. Overall this was the best performance I have ever been to. Cheers to Mcmorrow and his band!

    Dan Mangan, James Vincent McMorrow, and all hose involved in putting on this show dos an outstanding job well done. The venue was great and the audience appreciated the intimate setting. I loved hearing McMorrow's music come to life! The assortment and progression of his song selection was just perfect. I look forward to more performances in the future!

    James Vincent McMorrow has the voice of an angel

    I was wonderfully surprised that JVM sounded so "big" in a large venue. I had heard some radio shows where he scaled down but much prefer his stage presence. His voice is beautiful, but I really love the 4-part harmony he creates with the rest of the band.

    JVM seemed so proud to be in front of sn electric band. They were too loud. You go to see him to revel in his voice. Not to hear the instruments.

    James Vincent rocked!

    James Vincent McMorrow has two, full albums. The older one leans more rock, folk and soul. (Think Ray LaMontagne). The more recent work is ambient, downtempo and airy (think James Blake). This concert not only had a mix of songs from the bands catalog, they were mixed. By that I mean, the old songs had the new twist and the new ones had the old flavor. And, ALL three backing musicians sang back up vocals, creating an incredible harmony. Just BRILLIANT! Well done.

    Bad sound and pieces too similar - boring

    The venue at the House of Blues is great - no question about that. I enjoy it every time I go there. The James McMorrow concert was not a highlight for me. I did not know the guy in the first place - maybe that was the problem. I recognized two or three of the songs but most of it was too similar for my taste. Also think he is overdoing it when it comes to the high notes - it's interesting a few times but not for 1.5 hours. Some of the pieces were really good, but the sound guy spoilt the experience. The whole concert came over like a big stir fry. So overall I enjoyed some moments of it but it was not convincing.
