About

J MASCIS IN CONCERT:

Legendary singer and guitarist J Mascis is best known as the frontman of beloved indie band Dinosaur Jr., but recent critical praise has focused on his solo work as a folk singer-songwriter . Mascis is consistently ranked among the world's best guitar players, and fans lucky enough to see him perform songs like "Every Morning" and "Several Shades of Why" -- two highlights from his solo catalog -- will have no trouble seeing why. Whether he's playing newer folk material or offering up renditions of Dinosaur Jr. favorites, J Mascis never ceases to impress ticket buyers with his stunning guitar playing, world-wise voice, and seasoned showmanship on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Amherst, MA-born J Mascis cut his teeth performing in hardcore band Deep Wound before founding Dinosaur Jr. in 1984. Over the course of ten studio albums and numerous other releases, Dinosaur Jr. established itself as one of the preeminent bands in indie rock, achieving considerable crossover success in the '90s with mainstream hits like "Start Choppin'" and "Feel the Pain". Mascis made his solo debut in 1996 with the acoustic album Martin + Me, an acclaimed record that marked a new chapter in his career. Since then he has released several other acclaimed albums, in addition to continuing to record and perform with Dinosaur Jr. In 2014 Mascis released Tied to a Star, a hushed, delicate album full of wistful folk songs that both contrast with and complement his previous rock work. A veteran live performer known for his idiosyncratic guitar technique and career-spanning performances, J Mascis continues to wow on his unforgettable tours.

I have been a fan of Dinosaur Jr since the early 90s. I saw them in Boston about 5 years ago. Seeing J. do a solo show was the ultimate experience.

J Mascis does to a guitar what Ryan Gosling does to women.

J sounds as great alone as he does with Dino

by SleuthOfBears on 10/20/14Bowery Ballroom - New York

I've been a huge fan of Dino Jr. for a few years now, and I see them almost every time they play NYC. This was my first time seeing J solo, and he was just as good with an acoustic as he was with Lou, Murph, and 12 tons of distortion. J's singing goes really well with the mellow, acoustic music. It's very relaxing and fall-sounding. His melodies sound just as good whether they're unplugged, or played through a fully cranked amp. He does plenty of Dinosaur songs, and their solo acoustic arrangements sound great - that's the sign of a great song. He's one of the greatest musicians out there, go see him!

    J should be an icon

by musco on 4/2/11Mercury Lounge - New York

I've been a casual Dinosaur Jr fan for twenty years but have never seen them, nor have I collected much of their music. That said, they're an incredible band, combining the best of sonic onslaught with melody, sensitivity and humor. J Mascis's guitar is unforgettable and so is his voice. I wasn't sure what to expect of his solo album, but it's one of my favorite albums of the year, delivering both of those assets beautifully--more so than I expected. And I was also pleased with the ensemble nature of the album. So my expectations for his solo show at Mercury Lounge were high. I wasn't disappointed. He plays like a true artist, even if he falls into the bludgeon-your-eardrums category, generally a positive quality. The sound at the club was great. My only complaints would be 1) that I couldn't make out any lyrics, although the guitar shined, and 2) that the crowd was completely immobile. I guess it's no fault of J's if the majority of his fans are too old to rock with him.
