when the opener ends up playing last...

by lostintheair on 7/18/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

when i heard isis was doing a summer tour i was thrilled. i've listened to them for close to 8 years but had yet to see them play live. i'd heard of the melvins, but since isis was listed as the opener, had no intention of staying for the whole show. later i heard this was going to be isis' farewell/last tour. i bought my ticket the next day because i knew there wouldnt be another chance to see them. got to the show only to discover an unmentioned opening act, totimoshi was also on the bill, though this wasnt listed on either ticketmaster or livenation or even isis' webpage. they were actually pretty good and i picked up an album of theres on the way out. so here i am all excited for isis to come on, rock my world for an hour or so and then i can get home and get to sleep since i have work at 6am. turns out, as im told by isis' merch guy, that the melvins are using the same instruments as totimoshi, and the line-up was now totimoshi, melvins, and then isis. not being able to wait around for another hour or so (of course the show didnt start on time) for the melvins to finish, i had to leave. extremely disappointing. had i known isis was playing last, maybe i could have gone out to the show later or taken a nap beforehand or something. just a very disappointing experience all around. maybe ill catch them on a reunion tour in like 5 years or something

Isis Farewell Tour: Ever to be remembered

by Andycat on 6/21/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

We all have our favorite bands that we "hard sell" to our friends. We all have our favorite songs that burst w/meaning in quick moments. But then there is the music that will endure throughout our lives, actually gaining in depth and meaning, unfolding it's wares as we ourselves pass through time. So although Isis has apparently ceased it's temporal existence as a performing band, the experience of Thursday night only confirmed their place in our heads and hearts. Never a group of personalities that vainly overshadowed their art, the members of Isis stood firmly on the solid ground of their accomplishments and stretched their efforts beyond a simple performance of their music. I have been blessed to see them many times before, and the energy given to those present this night surpassed anything I have been witness to before. They gave all to us and although we may have wanted more, there was enough, and there is enough as we will listen again and again and wonder. Thank you, Isis!

    Isis will be missed

by specks302 on 6/21/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

It took longer than I wanted for Isis to get on stage, but once they got up, they were amazing. Isis sounded just as great live as they did on any of their cds, except you could feel the bass rolling through your body. amazing show, the TLA was small and personal and great. I'm so happy I got to see this show, my friends and I will be talking about it for years to come. Isis will be missed but there's no denying that they stopped while they're on top and made some amazing works of art together.

Melvins still at top of the rock foodchain

by Dingledangle on 6/20/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Didn't go for opener or stay for Isis. Melvins took the middle slot at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Security were courteous and efficient. Found a comfortable spot with a great view from the side riser. The soundsystem was big but maybe just under the decibel requirements for the thunderous rock of the Melvins. Low end frequencies caused some crackling in the mains. Lighting was above average but sporadic spotlights flashed at audience is always irritating. The sheer intensity of the two synchronized drummers was truly awe-inspiring. Primal. You felt it in your gut. Obviously seasoned veterans, the Melvins were tighter than humanly possible, but with a sense of casual "looseness". They've rehearsed hard and have perfected these songs on the road. The intricate rhythmic patterns, odd time signatures and non-formulaic breakdowns were flawless. These guys are having a lot of fun. A perfect blend of power, aggression and humor. Melvins really started this type of rock and inspired MANY bands, yet after 25+ years still rock harder and smarter than anybody. Even if you hate heavy, challenging rock, you owe it to yourself to catch at least one of their incredible shows in your lifetime.

    Giants collide, you leave happy.

by StainedxClass on 6/20/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I'd never seen either of these bands so I didn't quite know what to expect, but I was here for Isis so I was very excited to hear that Melvins graciously gave them the final spot since it was Isis' final tour. The opening act, Totimoshi, gave an entertaining 35-minute show full of terrific guitar work and great riffs, but once Melvins hit the stage the show really started. King Buzzo is a lot of fun to watch, from his mirror-silver guitar to his vocal antics both in the songs and addressing the crowd. I didn't know most of the Melvins' songs but the twin drumming made everything interesting beneath the crushing riffs, and true to their reputation, they even threw in Dueling Banjos about halfway through the set. An electric performance that certainly made a fan out of me. After a delay of about 15 minutes (an aroma filled the room during this time suggesting that Isis and Melvins may have been getting their money's worth from a certain plant), Turner and the rest of Isis took the stage to raucous cheers. I must say, though, that their early material (from Celestial and Oceanic) sounds a whole lot like loud noise in a live setting, albeit headbanging, fist-pumping noise at that. Still, when Threshold of Transformation came around, the energy really picked up. The rest of the list was great, especially So Did We. The band left the stage, whereupon the crowd broke into a chant of "Please don't leave! Please don't leave!", both for the show and the band's existence. Our cries were heard and Isis returned to play their two most popular songs, "In Fiction" (which was terrific) and "The Beginning and the End" (also great, and a fitting closer). Closing the show with a bout of shredding and crashing drums, Isis left the stage in accordance with the bit of musical wisdom that you should always leave your fans satisfied and wanting more. An overall excellent show by all three acts, highlighted by the stunning set by Melvins.

    Amazing show

by Godel on 6/18/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

This so was damn amazing, only reason it wasn't 5 stats was because Isis and Melvins swapped spots so Isis closed. Melvins put on a much better show then Isis and have been around too long not be closing, even though it is Isis' last tour.
