Great to see Professor Irvin Mayfield back on stage and his commitment to promoting youth music programs!
I almost felt guilty: the musicians were exceptional but the crowd so sparse. What happened to the advertisement for this event? Friends told me they didn't hear about it. Rick Braun is fabulous so I'm very disappointed (for the artists) that more people not there for this splendid performance; I counted less than 100 at end of night. I didn't get name of group from So. Africa but they were also fabulous. Thank you Irvin Mayfield for gathering all of these fine musicians. From my perspective, it was a delightful evening and I think the Civic theater is a grand old lady.
Instead of the great classic jazz trumpet, we got show with weird electronic instruments. It was painful to listen to, left after 20 minutes. Not sure what Kermit Ruffins did!
This show happened to be the Sunday night at the end of Jazz Fest. Mayfield is awesome on his own and the orchestra is an amazing collection of musicians. The Trumpet Mafia was outstanding. Then, for this performance Trombone Shorty joind the group on stage and he is phenomenal. To top it all off, we were graced with a cameo appearance by the legendary musical genius, Stevie Wonder. Worda can not explain the experience.
When Irvin Mayfield partners with Dee Dee Bridgewater & his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, magic happens! I hope to see this partnership again.
We knew it was gonna be great. We have seen Irvin Mayfield and Co. before and have his recordings. Add Dee Dee Bridgewater to the mix and play it at our first trip to the Apollo? On Hallowe'en? If you don't love or even understand jazz, you would still be overwhelmed by the professional quality of this performance and feel very much at home here. Irvin conducted the orchestra, played off Dee Dee and performed his own shattering-beautiful music, all the while enjoying himself and his audience, while making it all look easy. Dee Dee Bridgewater is a compelling talent who generously shared the stage while she playfully interacted with Irvin and the other musicians. Along with her stage presence is that gifted voice, blending note to note in keeping with the instruments. She too loves these musicians and her audience. The only thing is: when are they coming back?
Irvin Mayfield continues to get better and better. He is already great and his love of New Orleans Jazz while being a students of classical music comes through with every not he plays. NOJO is outstanding. When you see them all, Irivn, Dee Dee Bridgewater and every orchestra musician playing with such joy in their gifts and talents, you cant help but be happy. Everyone left Saturday night Feeling Happy. Thank you !
Had not heard of this relatively new jazz orchestra and was wonderfully surprised by the energy and talent on board. A lively and toe-tapping evening.
The mood was set from the moment the band hit the stage. They were talented, charismatic and engaging. Irvin Mayfield was an outstanding host. I can't say enough about this performance. I would see it again every weekend. At the end they literally had the entire audience on their feet "shaking what their momma gave 'em."
Irvin Mayfield And The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra at The Apollo was one of the best concerts EVER! The band was amazing. Individual performances by band members were great. My favorites included LOUIS ARMSTRONG What a Wonderful World, and You got a Friend in Me. They also had a young man from NOLA now starting music school here in NYC play a solo! Really?! What an amazing tribute to this young musician. His performance was fabulous! Most memorable was the band playing as Aaron Neville sang Ave Maria. I have been to concerts at Apollo in the past. This concert made me want to come back. I will now check the calendar every few weeks and hope to score an amazing performance like Irvin Mayfield And The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. I almost missed this one!!
