Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball History

The Iowa State Cyclones played their first men’s basketball game in 1907. The team has been affiliated with an intercollegiate conference — today the Big 12 — since the NCAA formed in 1910, when the Cyclones' conference was known as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

A total of 41 Cyclones have gone on to become professional basketball players, including 18 Top 10 draft picks. Olympic bronze medalist Jeff Grayer and Ames native Fred Hoiberg are among Iowa State’s alumni, and the latter returned after a 10-year career in the NBA as the Cyclones’ coach, winning the Big 12 twice and Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012.

The Cyclones have a long-running in-state rivalry with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, which encompasses all sports and is known as the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The annual Hy-Vee Classic, named for the local supermarket chain, features Iowa State challenging Drake and Northern Iowa in alternate years. The Cyclones' closest Big 12 Conference rivals are the Kansas Jayhawks. Iowa State is currently coached by T.J. Otzelberger.

    Parking is an issue

by Ken on 1/28/24Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

Great game and great atmosphere, terrible public parking. The shear number of empty parking spots in the donor lots while public lots were full all the way to reimen gardens was ridiculous. Judging from the crowd all the donor seats were full so having that many open extra spots saved for donors was just wrong. Do better

    ISU - OSU Men’s Basketball 2/11/23

by Kelly on 2/14/23Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

The game was a good time even though the Cyclones were terrible at the freethrow line, which cost them the game. I was disappointed that I could not print the tickets, however.

    We had a great time!

by Denise on 3/9/22Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

Lots of fun entertainment during the game. Fun college vibe. Would have liked more food options and of course the experience would have been just a little better had they won the game. It was exciting, however, as the game went into overtime. Would do it again!

    Needs a barcode

by NA on 2/22/22Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

Everything was great, just wish Ticketmaster had bar codes on your phone. Left me scrambling to print a ticket day of. I guess I should have been prepared but like who doesn’t have barcodes for phones these days? Not Ticketmaster. \_(‘-‘)_/

    Hilton Magic

by UncleShorty on 12/23/21Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

It’s the loudest I’ve ever heard Hilton Coliseum. The fans and players were excited to be there. TJ’s team of coaches have done a tremendous job! I am looking forward for the Big 12 play. It’s going to get tougher but I think we have shown determination to win on both offense and defense. Go Cyclones!!

    Awesome

by Hanna on 1/14/20Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

Row 5 seats 7-10 in Hilton Colliseum, great seats. Close to the action. Only bad thing, they are behind the basketball hoop, which partially blocked the view.

    Iowa Star CS Texas

by Kim on 2/5/19Iowa State Cyclones - Hilton Coliseum - Ames

Great tickets only down side is no where did it say the Hilton coliseum has a clear bag policy. We parked a long walk away so I had to return my purse to the car. Otherwise great game... wish Texas would have won!
