Take your kids to the symphony!

by Puppyparent on 11/11/10Lakeland Center Youkey Theatre - Lakeland

This was a great opportunity to take my 13-year-old daughter to the symphony. She had a report to do for school that required concert attendance so that was initally why we went. Turns out it was a very nice evening that we both really enjoyed and I was pleased to give her the opportunity to experience the arts--something important for all kids, I believe. Well worth the time and money, and the Youkey theater was the perfect environment. We sat very close (3rd row) and it was great for hearing the most subtle of music from the violin section. We also had a great view of the phenomenal pianist and the director. However, it was really too close to get a good overall view of the whole orchestra. Didn't really see any of the rest of the musicians.

    This is a Symphony Orchestra?

by Facethewoods on 8/20/10Lakeland Center - Lakeland

Taking their name from the official name of Polk County, Polk Imperial County, the ISO sounds impressive. They also have a really nice venue to play at, but don't waste your time. First of all, they seem more like a middle school orchestra than a professional orchestra. They are seldom unified, and some really don't seem to be taking their music seriously. Of course their are a few exceptions. The Concert Master at least seems to be trying, but one person playing really well in a disjointed orchestra still sounds like a cacophony. One of the Cello players looks bored and sometimes twirls his cello around when he has nothing to play, just like a bored little boy in a middle school orchestra might. Second, as the titles of their concert series suggest, they are really more of a pops orchestra than a traditional symphony orchestra. All the titles of their concerts seem to be a joke or pun, which makes sense, since they are not a serious orchestra. Maybe they should change their name to the Lakeland Pops, or even the Polk Pops; they like puns so much, this really would be more fitting.

    Outstanding Concert

by classicallover1 on 3/24/10Lakeland Center Youkey Theatre - Lakeland

The music was superb. The concert began with an excellent rendition of the "Romeo and Juliet" fantasy overture by Tchaikovsky. The "Rhapsody In Blue" by Gershwin was performed beautifully by Jade Simmons and the orchestra complemented her well. After the intermission, another Gershwin favorite "American In Paris" was very well done with a taxi horn. Concluding the concert was the "New World Symphony" by Antonin Dvorak (mvt. 1, 2 and 4). The performance was powerful and the haunting second movement was played superbly. The finale was also outstanding.

    Simply Christmas

by Granny9 on 12/20/09Lakeland Center Youkey Theatre - Lakeland

My husband, the people who sat around us, and myself were disappointed in the 1st half before intermission. The choir didn't seem to be together, they had their heads in their music, and I only saw one lady who was into the music. It gave us the impression that they didn't get enough practice on the music. The soprano soloist was excellent. I enjoyed listening to her. The orchestra was also excellent. Our favorite part was the 12 days of Christmas medley. The evening turned the corner with that song, and we enjoyed the rest of the performance.

Very good. Pianist was amazing. Wonderful to see all those orchestra members immersed in their music.
