About

Immolation in Concert

There are great death metal bands, and then there are true OGs. Immolation is both. Hailing from Yonkers, New York, the group found its roots as Rigor Mortis, a gritty, early death metal group that gained traction in the metal world from 1986 to 1988. After disbanding, founding members Dave Wilkinson and Robert Vigna teamed up with Ross Dolan and formed Immolation.

Releasing a few demos over the next several years, Immolation developed a following in the burgeoning underground death metal scene, eventually signing with Roadrunner Records to release their debut studio LP, ‘Dawn of Possession.' The record was a bold foray into death metal, which was still in its early years as a genre. In 1995, the band leveled up by signing to revered label Metal Blade Records, releasing a number of punishing, challenging death metal albums over the next decade. For most of the ‘90s and early ‘00s, the band was vehemently anti-religion in their song lyrics, but they had a change of heart after 9/11, coming to channel their darkness in other ways.

Immolation started really breaking through in 2010, receiving awards and accolades with the excellent, fiery ‘Majesty and Decay,' which caught the attention of numerous big publications and debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.

Their follow-up, 2013's ‘Kingdom of Conspiracy,' earned strong reviews. Critics said that the veteran rockers had hit a powerful new stride. ‘Kingdom of Conspiracy' debuted at No. 13 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. Their 2017 ripper, ‘Atonement,' also received praise from sites like Metal Sucks, Consequence of Sound, and Pitchfork. Many reviewers noted the album's impressive anthems, technical complexity, and undeniable place in death metal history. Exclaim! ranked it on their list of best metal and hardcore albums of the year.

The iconic band joins Morbid Angel for East Coast dates in March 2019.

    96 Oz. Of Beer Metal

by Chickie on 3/22/22Irving Plaza - New York

PBR 24 Oz. Metal Beer cans filled my palette during this Extreme Black Metal night. Brooklyn’s Black Anvil led this Black Metal onslaught with songs from their “As Was” album. Washington State’s Mortician was next with their heavy riffs and drum percussion. Demolition Hammer was next with their two lead guitarists James Reilly and Derek Sykes with lead singer & bass player Steve Reynolds. Demolition Hammer led their Epidemic Of Violence show with “Skull Fracturing Nightmare.” Demolition Hammer continued with songs from their “Tortured Existence” album. Generation Records has the cassette for Demolition Hammer “Tortured Existence.” Irving Plaza now packed with beer guzzling fans continued cheering throughout the Demolition Hammer show. Now, Dan Lilker (Brutal Truth, Anthrax and Storm Troopers Of Death) introduced Immolation from Yonkers. Immolation played songs from their new “Acts Of God” album. Immolation and drummer Steve Shalaty pummeled their way throughout the set with songs from “Kingdom Of Conspiracy.”

Evening with Immolation, Vader, Abigail Williams,

    by 4check on 10/18/10Whisky - Hollywood

I generally don't like going to the Whiskey - I only go there if the line-up is eminently worth it. And I'm glad I went this night. Concert could not have been better - sound was great, we had an excellent table overlooking the stage, the bands rocked. I'm a big fan of Immolation, and they amazed as usual. Technical virtuosity delivered with a ton of soul (of the metal type). Great guys, too! Vader is, of course, a headlining band itself and has been one of my favorites for many years. They didn't do as much of the older stuff as I'd like, but that's ok. Abigail Williams - I'd forgotten how black this band is! Very impressive, I had to buy the two CDs they had with them (all I'd had previously was "Legend") Imperial Decay is definitely up and coming. An enjoyable listen, definitely head-bangable. Pile of Priests has a good drummer, but as a group they have some work to do. Especially on balancing their sound. Drums were the main thing heard.

    Awesome Show

by Acloss on 10/17/10Galaxy Theatre - Santa Ana

Vader kicked ass and performed very well with their new band members. Piotr "Peter" the lead singer and front man was great and even hung out after Immolation to meet and greet with the fans. It was my first concert seeing Immolation. They bring it and then some. All-in-all it was a great show not the forgotten.
