About

IAN ANDERSON IN CONCERT:

Progressive rock icon Ian Anderson rose to fame in the late '60's as the frontman of legendary prog outfit Jethro Tull, and he continues to carry on the band's legacy today. The eccentric singer and all-around musical talent elevated the flute to rock and roll prominence with his prodigious playing on classic hits like "The Witch's Promise" and "Living in the Past", and he continues to delight fans with virtuosic flute-playing at his mesmerizing live shows. Although Jethro Tull officially retired their name in 2011, fans can still catch Anderson on a highly anticipated tour that features the late great band's biggest hits as well as cuts from his 2014 album Homo Erraticus.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Scottish-born, British-raised Ian Anderson was exposed to music at an early age through his father's big band and jazz records. He formed his first band Blades in 1962, and a few years later he took up the flute as a way to set his sound apart from a musical landscape already saturated with hallowed guitarists. In 1967 he moved to London with the band, which underwent numerous name changes before finally settling on the name Jethro Tull, which had been suggested by a booking agent. The band's 1968 debut album This Was fared relatively well, but their 1969 sophomore album Stand Up launched them to international superstardom, topping the UK Albums Chart and establishing them as pioneers of the budding progressive rock movement. A string of critically and commercially successful albums followed over the next three decades, including a number of popular solo albums by Anderson. In 2012 Anderson released TAAB2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock, a sequel to Jethro Tull's epochal 1972 album Thick as a Brick, and in 2014 he thrilled fans with the announcement of a tour featuring the legendary band's greatest hits performed alongside his album Homo Erraticus.

    NOT as great as exspected!

by L. on 7/13/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The music was audible, the voice was not. The sound people should have made adjustments to mic that Ian was using for singing. Wish Ian would have played some of the more popular hits of his. The ones he did sing to were a little stretched out from what I could hear. Should have sung them in the origial fashion the songs were made. This is the opinion of both my husband and myself...we are old enough to remember Jethro Tull as a major band in 70s. We were disappointed.

    Jethro Tull

It was a great experience. Loved the visual effects to go with the music.

    Jethro Tull 50th

by Cobragranny on 7/11/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Ian Anderson is a true classic performer. The current band are excellent musicians. The videos in the background were amazing. Last time I saw Tull in the 70's, they wore rabbit suits out on stage. No rabbit suits this time, just pure talent. I loved every minute of the show. I hope they come back to San Diego again.

    The Music is Still There

by Tom on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The flute soars over the Base sound just like 50 years ago. The voice either wasn’t miked or it’s gone. The only words we heard came from the videos. They had a good blend of past & present with the video board. The last two songs were worth the price of admission

Overall a good evening, but set list inaccessible

by M. N. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Ian is a great entertainer. His wit and musical prowess - as well as that of his band - carried the evening, along with a great video backdrop. The evening would have easily hit 5 stars had all of this been paired with a set list that leaned more heavily on Tull classics. Yes, we got Aqualung, Locomotive Breath, Your Never Too Old and Songs from the Wood. Clearly missing: Thick as a Brick, Cross Eyed Mary, Hymn 43, Bungle in the Jungle, Teacher, etc, etc. No, I wasn't looking for a greatest hits show, but there were just too few favorites. The crowd got to their feet only once - which clearly perplexed the Civic Center ushers, who ran around telling people to sit down (at a rock concert?!)

Unfortunately, it could have been a good experience

by M. on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The bass was SO LOUD it overwhelmed Ian's voice and his flute. It could have been an awesome concert, but someone thought we came to hear an incredibly loud bass (could have been either the drum bass or bass guitar.... we weren't sure which).

    Great flute, lousy voice

by cogsci guy on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

This was an interesting concert, in large part due to the insertion of a few comments from former band members (in short videos). Ian Anderson is also a great flutist. However, he can no longer sing. You can barely hear him when he does sing, and he is clearly not quite in tune. It's really too bad, because at other points in the program (e.g., Aqualung), there is a video of a young guy singing some of the parts, while Ian sings some others. So, it would seem he is at least somewhat self-aware of the issue. It would be great if he could find someone to tour with him to take *all* of the singing parts, while he just does the flute parts. Also, from where we were sitting (just under the balcony), the sound wasn't great. It was even hard to recognize some of the songs, in part because you couldn't really hear the words, due to his voice issues. I realized I didn't actually know a lot of the songs, except the ones from Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. Anyway, if you love Jethro Tull, this is a good concert, but be prepared to imagine what the voice parts are.

Great Concert, great production, great sound...

No doubt, Jethro Tull is one of the greatest bands ever.

    Great show - BAD ENDING

by Rob on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The Jethro Tull show was great! Unfortunately, we chose to park across the street from the House of Blues Downtown at a place called 5th and Broadway. Our car was broken into and ransacked and the parking lot people have been useless. I highly recommend avoiding 5th and Broadway parking at all costs!

Tull still going strong after 50 years!

by JT on 7/10/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The Jethro Tull 50th anniversary concert was fantastic! The group was tight and Ian's voice seemed better than in recent concerts. The music after all these years still is top notch. This is a concert well worth seeing if your a fan of progressive rock.
