About

I the Mighty in Concert

Categorizing I the Mighty is a nearly impossible task. In fact, even on the same album, the San Francisco quartet can sound like a different band from song to song. On 2015's 'Connector,' I the Mighty touch on throttling post-hardcore ("Adrift"), punk-pop with giant chorus hooks ("Lady of Death"), and melancholy synth-pop with glitchy rhythms ("Slow Dancing Forever"). However, on their very next album, 2017's 'Where the Mind Wants to Go / Where You Let It Go,' the band incorporates flourishes like nimble math-rock riffs, Death Cab for Cutie-style indie-pop compositions, and fuzzed-out rock 'n' roll glam. The resulting music ends up somewhere between brainy progressive rock and earnest modern alternative pop.

I the Mighty's origins are far more straightforward, if not far quieter than you might expect from a band of their ilk. Vocalist/guitarist Brent Walsh — an avowed fan of bands such as Say Anything, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used — and guitarist Ian Pedigo started an acoustic duo called Breakpoint in 2007 while still in high school. Within a few years, the pair had added bassist Chris Hinkley and drummer Blake Dahlinger, and they changed the band's name to I the Mighty to reflect the expanded lineup and sound. A record deal with Equal Vision followed in 2011. Then came 2012's 'Karma Never Sleeps' EP and 2013's 'Satori.'

Live, I the Mighty exhibits equal parts aggression and restraint, allowing room for both their progressive nuances and punk-oriented energy. Accordingly, the band has toured with a number of groups that bridge genres, including Coheed & Cambria, Glassjaw, and Pierce the Veil. In early 2019, I the Mighty team up for a U.S. tour with Tonight Alive and Doll Skin, another inspired pairing of acts that delight in defying expectations. Expect the band to stride forward with great confidence, secure in their genre-blending ways.

Always an amazing time when I The Mighty plays! And the boys always take time after the show to chat with their fans. Amazing, down to earth guys.
