About

Hypocrisy in Concert

These Swedish death metallers are the flagship band for the notion that good things come to those who wait. Of course, it helps if you're out there blasting riffs and crushing skulls during that time.

Founded in Sweden in 1991 by Peter Tägtgren, who'd already been part of Florida's death metal scene and jamming with bands like Malevolent Creation, Hypocrisy was initially a one-man show. Once Tägtgren signed to Nuclear Blast, however, it was time to expand.

As a full band, Hypocrisy released ‘Penetralia' in 1992, tackling themes like Satanism and anti-Christianity. They continued putting out hard-hitting, goat-horn-throwing, religiously oriented tunes until their third album, ‘The Fourth Dimension,' where the music took a decidedly sci-fi, paranormal turn. Their big break came with a 1999 self-titled album, which saw the band moving in a more melodic death metal direction. It got them ranked 408 in Rock Hard magazine's 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time list, and the album reached No. 85 on the charts in Germany.

With 2005's ‘Virus,' Hypocrisy finally found their first charting album in their homeland of Sweden. It probably didn't hurt that they recorded ‘Virus' with Norwegian drummer Horgh from the seminal black metal group Immortal. On their victory lap, the band toured with Cannibal Corpse.

The 2009 album ‘A Taste of Extreme Divinity' was their first to chart in the U.S., reaching No. 23 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart, proving that their decimating tunes were taking hold across the pond. With their 2013 slammer ‘End of Disclosure,' the band reached No. 12 in the U.S. on the Heatseekers chart. Hypocrisy commemorated their long and fortuitous career with a 2012 DVD titled ‘Hell Over Sofia - 20 Years of Chaos and Confusion.' It's as intense as it sounds. The film reached No. 15 on the charts in Sweden.

    Sound isssues

by Alex on 5/4/22Le Studio TD - Montréal

The sound was terrible. Too bass heavy, the vocals were muffled. Also, when you have a Montreal band on the bill and they only get 6 songs, it irritates half the crowd

    Once in a lifetime

by Vaelithe on 3/30/19The Masquerade - Atlanta

Hypocrisy has always held a special place in my heart and I had previously been unable to catch them live. The performance was amazing! The band was very tight and the mix was great, each instrument came through loud and clear! I was blown away by the experience and dreaded that it had to come to an end. Hypocrisy are veterans and I recommend everyone catch them at a show before you cant! You wont regret it.

Awesome, Tight Performance & Impressive Setlist

by DJ Raptor XS on 3/30/19The Masquerade - Atlanta

Peter, Mikael, Horgh & Tomas played an extremely tight set. Of course, this isn't surprising, given the band's experience & legacy. Hypocrisy retains the live energy they've had for decades and continues to deliver a brutally fun experience. I hope their upcoming album isn't truly their final outing as Peter has alleged.

If the volume were a bit lower, you might have even been able to hear the music. Even so, the concert was LOUD and it was AWESOME.

    Hypocrisy brought it again!

    by Touchstone123 on 5/25/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - Milwaukee

Hypocrisy was absolutely awesome. Hypocrisy never ceases to amaze and entertain. The members are the true masters of their instruments, melodies, vocals and performance. The music stays true to the Death Metal genre while staying current. The sincerity and energy that they bring to their performances are one of the reasons they are a not to be missed musical group....the great music that they produce is the other reason. The 'Meet and Greet' was also an exceptional experience...being able to have a 'one on one' with the 'Guys' that produce the music we have listened to for years and that we so admire for their song writing, producing and performing capabilities. Thank you Guys, it was an absolutely Great Show! Looking forward to doing this all over again next time!
