Very excited about this opera. It was extremely original and moving in its simplicity. The premise of discovery and the story surrounding it was interesting. I thought the duration was very appropriate. (Only about 1.5 hours at the most.) The music was very beautiful. . Good opera for all ages. Seating was interesting. Very intimate atmosphere in a club-like setting.
On Thursday last the Houston Grand Opera, as part of their commissioned works for new operas on contemporary themes, presented O COLUMBIA , a highly melodic piece for three main singers, a chorus of ten and an ensemble of strings and woodwinds. Organized as a reverie about the catastrophic demise of the seven astronauts during reentry of the space shuttle Columbia, the piece celebrates the human spirit of discovery embodied as Lady Columbia and includes the character of Sir Walter Raleigh. Performed in about an hour and fifteen minutes the piece is quite touching.
Excellent singers. Recommend to include beautiful images of space and the music to include more percussion simulating the space travel lift off Congratulations
HGO presented this beloved Magic Fluite very pleasant way. It was a good show. I wished more audience had showed up and enjoyed this show. Only the negative aspects was the audio. Often, after switching to new scene and new soloist started singing, microphone was turned on a few seconds later. So the first few moment was not well audible. Perhaps the PA crew needs to understand the show ahead of time.
This was my first time to see an opera. I was very impressed with the singers in the acting. I was also impressed with the closeness to home for this event.
Music and performers were great but we thought that it was going to be a full production and not just a concert so we were disappointed.
I am a season subscriber to HGO and saw La Boheme performed last year at The Wortham, but when I saw they were going to do another performance at CWMP, I couldn't resist seeing it again. I'm sure doing an outdoor opera performance is incredibly challenging, but they pulled it off effortlessly. It was just as amazing as seeing it at The Wortham, and the casual feel to having it at the Pavilion was a lot of fun. Huge thanks to HGO, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and all of the sponsors who made it possible to bring the opera to The Woodlands!
The performers were incredible both musically and in their acting. The orchestra did a great job and the score contributed to the emotion of the story. This was my 16 year old son's first opera and he enjoyed it.
HGO's production was amazing. Extraordinary sound quality for a outdoor theater. Great set, outstanding orchestra and conductor and each member of the HGO performance did a stellar job.
