Houston Dynamo History

The Dynamo compete in Major League Soccer in the Western Conference. The team was established in 2005 when the Anschutz Entertainment Group — owners of the San Jose Earthquakes — moved the team to Houston after failing to find a new stadium in San Jose. The change of scenery proved to be a success, as the Dynamo won the MLS Cup in 2006 and 2007, their first two seasons. They were runners-up in 2011 and 2012, and were also Supporters' Shield runners-up in 2008. The Dynamo won the U.S. Open Cup in 2018, and again in 2023.

The Dynamo's main rival is FC Dallas, who they play in the Texas Derby, which was established in 2006. Each game, the winner of the Derby gets "El Capitán," a replica 18th-century cannon. The Dynamo are also intra-league rivals with Sporting Kansas City.

Dominic Kinnear was the Dynamo's first head coach and led them from 2005 until 2014, bringing the team their two championships. They are currently coached by Ben Olsen.

    Final game at Robertson Stadium

by Ericcc on 11/7/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

It was great to see the Dynamo play their last game on the U of H campus. It was cold and gusty at times, but the stadium was still pretty full. Concession wise- the hot dog buns were rock hard, but the pretzel was good. There were plenty of pre-game activities.

Great game; would've been better with my vuvuzela.

    by thor84 on 11/5/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

Aside from having to ditch my vuvuzela in the trash can on the way in, I thoroughly enjoyed the game and the outcome even more.

Our seats were under a camera platform! Could not sit in them and had to wander around the stadium for the entire game.

    Dynamo game disappointing

by MStelly on 10/25/11Robertson Stadium - Houston

The whole reason why I bought these tickets was to see David Beckham and Landon Donovan play. They weren't even there. My friends and I felt robbed.
