Harmony by the Bay was uneven

by bil11111 on 10/3/12Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View

I went to the festival because I have always enjoyed KFOG, really like Jimmy Cliff and Alison Kraus, and was familiar with a song by the Shins... My ticket showed that the event started at 2:00. We arrived at 2:00, walked thru the food court/merch area only to find out that the main venue did not open till 3:30, so we had to lug around our blankets etc until then... Then we found out that Jimmy Cliff was not on the mainstage, and that Alison Kraus followed him on the Mainstage immediately after so we would either miss the bigginning of her set, or the end of his.... Jimmy Cliff was fantastic, and was the highlight for me. The Givers were a good surprise, but the rest of the bands did not do that much for me. Alison Kraus would have been much better if the set order had been different. Personally I found the Shins rather dull, but maybe they are bigger in a different age demographic. But Alison should have at least been 2nd to close. Even Tegan and Sara acknowledged this in their opening remarks.... So Alison Kraus and Union Station started 10 minutes late into their already too short of set -- and then the band on the second stage started playing 5 minutes before they were slated to end!!! Their music requires silence, you guys!! I am not surprised that they played no encores when there was some electronica sounding music overpowering them! And due to the audience being split, she played to a 1/3 house! It just seemed really disrespectfull for a performer of her caliper... She has played before at a festival that I am the LD at, and it was wonderful!! I really think that you got the order wrong, and didn't really have a focus for what the show was about... Also, since she was playing to a small house, then the sound to me was harsh since there was so much reflective surface where there would normally be audience members.... I don't know if I would come again to this.... I would suggest using the smaller stage nearer to the main hall, making SURE that the small stage only plays when the large one isn't, and to have a more focussed roster. I like diversity, but not at the expense of the established artists such as Jimmy Cliff, and Alison Kraus... Or just do a parking lot festival somewhere else with two stages going back and forth between the two, or have music that does not require silence... It just seemed like the festival did not know who it was catering to, and wound up doing a so-so job overall.
