    Not what I expected

by jjjjjjjjjjjjjjj1111111111 on 12/7/10Claire Trevor Theatre - UCI Arts - Irvine

Some of my family suggested this was the "satanic" version. Although quite unique, creative and artsy, it was sooo gruesome - not for children! My mother wanted to leave at intermission and we did. I heard it got more grisly afterward.

    Hansel and Gretel

by eveeve on 12/6/10Claire Trevor Theatre - UCI Arts - Irvine

Overall a very entertaining opera. The highlights were the scenes where Hansel and Gretel were lost in the forest and then find the gingerbread house with the witch's minions tempting them with sweets. The ending with the resurrected children standing in the dark was chilling but ultimately triumphant as Hansel and Gretel helped them come fully back to life. I'll admit the first half was a little slow, but it is a good set up for the action of the second half.

    Hansel and Gretel

by Anonymous on 11/15/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

I really enjoyed the production! It was just the right length, a total 2 hours 15 minutes. My only "complaint" was that Gretel was often over-powered by the orchestra. I was thankful for the captioning above the stage, and was able to follow, but it was distracting. Otherwise, it was an excellent production, full of action, which is different from other operas I've seen where the characters stand pretty still....... these characters were all over the stage and upside down!! I loved it!

Hansel and Gretal Good, But Undeveloped

by UnaCasa on 11/15/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

Wonderful acting and voices in Portland Opera's Hansel and Gretel. However, I was expecting a more dark tale and although the witch stole the show in my opinion, was portrayed as humorous and goofy and you never got the feeling that she was evil nor bad, just mischievous. The story portrayed, did not flow as well as the fairytale and some scenes were "rushed" or confusing. It was a good production, but wish the story/plot flowed smoother.

Sitting in the audience next to a smart young man who was in middle school, was such a wonderful experience. By the way the Opera was excellent as well. It was a wonderful time.

Hansel and Gretel is an interesting multi-layered

    by young4ever on 11/11/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

The pre-concert lecture with Bob Kingston and the "back talk" with Chris Mattaliano and the conductor were especially interesting and informative. The opera has beautiful music and a multi-layered story which leaves one with lots to think about. My seat was in the third row on the side and my sight line was blocked by the sides of the deep set walls of the room on stage. But then, I could always hear the music and the singing even tho I couldn't see what the characters were doing. I would reccommend this to any one, though I probably wouldn't take my grandchildren until they were 10 or older.

Cultural Experience of a Child's Tale

by Nagano on 11/10/10Keller Auditorium - Portland

This was my first opera experience so can't give much of a review for an opera show itself. I can though give insight of entertainment value from a person that enjoys good times. That said, this show was very enjoyable and an experience that everyone who wishes to a different experience then the movies; this is a must try. The show itself was very good. Music was beautiful, actors were amazing, and the lighting was just spectacular. As a whole, this was very well executed. There were scenes that took so much thought, talent, and practice. I highly recommend checking this show out. Besides it's a great excuse to dress up, look sharp, and spend the evening with your company.

It was fantastic and such a wonderful cast. Above my expectations by far. I just love the Opera!!! I really enjoy the Sunday afternoon matinee's. Keep up the good work. The lecture before the Opera was very interesting and informative. The speaker was very good and could hear him perfectly!
