An experience I won't soon forget!

by Hannah on 3/13/19Somerville Theatre - Somerville

I first heard of Habib Koite nearly 8 years ago as a high school student. Living in a very rural area, my classmates and I didn't have much of a perspective of the world outside our small town. My Humanities teacher made it a point to expose us to art, music, writings, and ideologies of people from places unlike our own. One of the most memorable classes was one in which we watched the full Acoustic Africa in Concert DVD (including music from Afel Bocoum, Habib Koité, and Oliver Mtukudzi). We talked about the music of Mali, it's consonance, and how it was one of the most universally loved music styles. Moved by the incredible sounds, my best friend and I begged our teacher after class to let us borrow a copy of the DVD so we could save it onto our computers. I've listened to the album for the past few years in both happy times and sad times, to uplift my low spirits and to align with my high spirits. It's been a real comfort. Last week, the night before my 25th birthday, I was able to see Habib Koite in concert at the Somerville Theatre. It was truly an unforgettable experience!

Habib Koite is a living legend

    by jfgm1113 on 2/18/14Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUS

This is the type of musician who should be selling out large concert halls. The show was energetic and fun. Mr. Koité is very interactive. So much talent!

I believe you will not regret this!

by newfanofHabib on 2/15/14Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUS

Hearing and being there to experience this performance was outstanding. Exceptional music performed with real heart and soul. The great majority of the audience was simply mesmerized. It was as though we were venturing out on a beautiful visit into the core of what is Mali - the music as an expression of life there and in that region. Koite is deliberate in bringing us many different voices from diverse strains of the culture of that region. The musicianship was so fine too - par excellence. The composition rich and deep. This is very dynamic music which can be enjoyed on many levels. From the simply beautiful in tone, to very, very sophisticated structures. So glad I was there. It was sublime.

    master guitarists!

by lovingafricanmusic on 4/8/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

i was skeptical of the combining of mali and zimbabwe, and it was charming to hear habib and tuku address the issue, w. afel the peacemaker... the contrast between the two voices and two guitar styles was interesting, the dancing of the mbira player so fun to watch, glad they featured the ngoni player too, a packed house, lots of africans, a great crowd, ending w. the tradition of audience coming onto stage...
