About

A critical smash on Broadway and in London, the two-time Tony Award® winning hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, AMERICAN IDIOT boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. With direction by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Steven Hoggett (Once) and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), the result is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

    AMERICAN IDIOT

    by VALERIE6782 on 6/5/18American Idiot - Irvine

Fabulous. I loved every minute of American Idiot. Every actor, singer and dancer was great. I want to see it again but tickets were not available. Hearty `thumbs up.`

    Meh

by FeverDog on 5/28/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Unless you're a big Green Day fan this isn't the play for you. Story line was incredibly difficult to follow and you're not really sure if it's based on the bands real life or just kind of made up for the sake of the story. Songs were pretty good, but many time there were too many male voices and they failed to harmonize. The choreography left a lot to be desired as they seemed like they were trying to choreograph a punk show crowd with 8-10 people.

"American Idiot" may be this generation's "Tommy"

by bellflowerbroadway on 5/27/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The energy and talent of the performers made this worth seeing. Some of the music was great, some not so much. For fans of Green Day this is bound to become a cult classic. It was a great performance of a work/school night since it lasted only about 90 minutes without an intermission; it ensured a relatively early evening.

Terrible Audience... Typical Musical... No Edge

by MWhiteley on 5/26/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

As a musical American Idiot was pretty standard. They took pseudo-punk songs, applied it to an unsophisticated story, and put typical musical voices behind it. I expected a lot more from Billy Joe Armstrong and was disappointed in the lack of edge from every other musical. With the soundtrack I felt that they could have really taken this someplace different, and made it amazing, unfortunately they did not. Now keep in mind that this could be VERY different on Broadway, so simply stated I was disappointed with the director of the travelling company. The audience was incredibly disrespectful, and it was abundantly clear they have never been to this type of performance. I have never seen so many people get up to use the restroom in the middle of a performance, and I have never seen so many people attempting to take pictures during a performance. There were A LOT of drunk people who were yelling... NOT singing... with the performance. I understand that because of the artist behind the performance these are not your typical musical attendees, but, it felt like the staff at the Pantages could have done a MUCH better job controlling the audience and their disrespectful behavior. Overall, I guess what I am saying is make sure you know what you are getting into, and accordingly adjust your expectations.

Holy Crap this was sooooooo good!! I love Green Day and was really unsure of what we were going to see and I was blown away!! What a wonderful story that was told through music. I took my 13 year old daughter and her BFF who both love Green Day and I was a bit worried about it being too grown up for them but it wasn't. It turned into a great reason for a "life lesson" conversation because they were very curious about a few things. I love how it starts off so in your face and loud!! I would see it again in a heartbeat!!!!

Green Day's American Idiot was outstanding again!

by rockermom50 on 5/23/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

This was the third time my son and I have seen American Idiot! We saw it the first time in Phoenix, AZ, and then Tucson, AZ. This last time we drove from Arizona and brought my mother from Washington as well. They blew us away yet again! I was looking forward to finding another city to see this when I heard the show was closing! So disappointed.

    Great Green Day Play!

by Meldorsa on 5/23/14California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San Bernardino

Acoustics were a bit distorted in the beginning and wasn't sure if it was from the location or the sound equipment was a bit loud. I thought the play got better toward the middle to end. Maybe because the songs were more familiar and more mellower. I really liked the solos and how they put together the songs to the time period/events that were going on. If you are a Green Day fan, then you must see this play. It's like a concert and a musical put together as one.
