GRACE JONES IN CONCERT:

When it comes to multi-hyphenate icons, legendary Jamaican performer Grace Jones stands alone. Singer, actress, model, fashion plate, Bond girl – Jones has done it all with a singular artistic vision that continues to mesmerize and enthrall as she enters her fifth decade as a performer. From her days as an androgynous disco diva to her reign as queen of the new wave and beyond, Jones has remained at the vanguard of music and fashion trends, collaborating with the best producers and designers from both fields to build a legacy of cutting-edge music and visual style that is unquestionably her own. At her incredible live performances Jones is known for stalking the stage with her signature scowl and striking severe poses in outré stagewear while she coos and purrs in her sultry contralto voice over rhythmically seductive classics like "Pull Up to the Bumper" and "I've Seen That Face Before." From the elaborate stage design to the multiple costume changes, Jones pulls out all the stops, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience that will make even the most casual fan a "Slave to the Rhythm."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Grace Jones was born and raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica before moving to New York with her family at age 13. She was picked on in high school for her skinny frame, but at age 18 she signed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina and moved to Paris. After rising to the top of the city's fashion scene and appearing on the covers of Vogue and Elle, she signed to Island Records and released 1977's Portfolio, a collection of disco covers of Broadway classics like "Send in the Clowns" and "Tomorrow." Jones released two more disco albums in the late '70s, but by the early '80s she had moved on to the sounds of reggae and new wave. Her 1981 album Nightclubbing was a global success, cracking the Top 10 in five countries thanks to hits like "I've Seen That Face Before" and "Pull Up to the Bumper." In 1982 she released A One Man Show, a long-form music video collaboration with director Jean-Paul Goude that introduced her striking visual style to the MTV generation and earned her a Grammy nomination. Mainstream acting gigs followed, including a role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film Conan the Destroyer and a coveted Bond girl role in 1985's A View to Kill. Her chart success continued in the late '80s with the albums Slave to the Rhythm and Island Life, but by the '90s Jones was focused primarily on acting. She revived her music career after a nearly 20-year studio hiatus in 2008 with Hurricane, an acclaimed return to form produced by Ivor Guest. Since then Jones has continued to do what she does best: slay in concert with epic performances that live up to her outsized reputation.

    Grace Rules!

by Dondi60 on 2/6/24Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

I've been seeing Grace perform live since I was a teenager. I had to laugh when she made fun of herself for those early shows when she would show up hours late and only sing a few songs. I was at the Paradise Garage for one of those. We never cared, we'd dance and party and all the rest until she appeared. I was up in the balcony and could see her just above the top of the set as the anticipation built. This performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom was not a drive by: she sang for almost two hours and wasn't ready to leave the stage when the band finally drifted off after the calls. Grace was in amazing form, looking and sounding fierce. Her singular style and dominance of the stage was incredible. And she was funny! The patter between songs (while she usually changed costumes on the side of the stage in view of the audience) was bawdy, amusing, happy, irreverent. She clearly enjoyed herself and it just made the show that much more enjoyable. Carrying on a cappella to say good night, she created an amazing mood as she sang "Amazing Grace."She was absolutely amazing that night and I'm glad I was there.

    Grace is the queen

    by Alan on 9/13/23

I called the venue and was told Grace Jones is no longer performing. I’m devastated I spent five hundred dollars to see her not Duran Duran . I’m the biggest Grace Jones fan . I first saw Grace Jones club universe in San Francisco 1993 . Also I saw her at the Tunnel in nyc and many other venues . She’s much better performer than Madonna or Lady Gaga . Does anyone have any additional information.

    Second time around

    by B. M. on 6/12/23

After experiencing Grace at Roseland Ballroom when she originally was promoting her album "Hurricane", two days before Hurricane Sandy hit the New York and New Jersey areas, my expectations were high. While the concert started a little late she opened with a grand entrance and marvelous style! She was in excellent voice and her costume changes and performances were all marvelous! Grace delivered as I hoped and gave a little more Rock/New Wave edge to the songs than the previous concert. My main bone of contention was with the clientele in attendance! Unlike her return to Roseland Ballroom which were and predominantly LGBT, this time there were many casual fan and curious non fans. Unfortunately, some others were rude, disruptive, and/or kept moving around when they didn't know the words to a song which I found to be exasperating! I kept my focus on the stage and performance because I was around a pleasant group of people for the duration of the concert. The concert came to an abrupt conclusion because of the fact that the conserving you closes up shop promptly at 11:00 p.m., which forced Grace to sing her closing song "La Vie En Rose" acapella. Grace gave a fabulous concert and entertaining commentary and banter with the audience as well! I knocked off a store because of the mix of actual fans of Grace with curious non-fans and casual fans which absolutely altered the atmosphere of the concert in ways that were not satisfying. Nevertheless, I would attend another Grace concert!

    Same Ole Grace......

by SJG1972 on 6/6/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Now I love and adore Grace Jones. As a long time fan I am aware of her constant lateness. It is the stuff of legends. It is not a problem when you are sitting in a theater or partying in a club. It is a problem when you are in a standing room only venue and after an 8 + hour work day she keeps you waiting another hour and half before performing. RANT OVER Grace gave us performance for an hour and a half of full vocals. NO LIPSYNCH and she had no hoarseness so she could have continued singing for another hour. You tell me which of today's artist can do that?!?! Her set list had some classics and latest tracks. I was disappointed she did not do a disco set as I would have loved to hear "I need a man" or some songs from The Muse or Portfolio album. She did give us an acapella version of "La Vie En Rose" which was MAGNIFICENT! Between the costume changes, set props, audience participation and going out into the crowd, Grace showed us that at 75 she has no desire to change or slow down. PHENOMENAL SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!

    it was ok

by juju212 on 6/5/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Grace is legend- some songs were fantastic but there were too many people it was over packed and everyone had cell phones and none of us could see behind the sea of cell phones (people blocking views /not being able to see the stage at all )). Sadly this is the state of things when fans are uninterested in being present and have no problem being incredibly rude and disrupting the experience of other fans. Even asking them to put down their phones accomplishes little. This one drunk woman next to me kept filming video on her phone with the flashlight on. Grace is a great performer although I didn't feel she was on point that night- I didn't love it. Also they needed a more efficient way of getting people in (the line around the block was ridiculous.

    Grace is Legendary

by Bru-Fi on 6/5/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Grace Jones is an effortless singer, there is no who can hold a candle to her. It was like she was born to sing and perform. She makes it look and so so easy. The backup band was stellar too. I wish the sound system did her and the band justice, very muddy and distorted. Also, since she started late and there was no opening act, it would have been nice if the venue pumped in some hip music to complement Grace Jones and her band. There was a faint hint of very low volume music in the background, so we pretty much stood around bored for an hour and half.
