About

Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award. He also found success as part of the Australian trio The Basics. In 2011, however, Gotye would catapult to fame with the undeniably infectious song “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra) -- the video of which spread across the web like wildfire. Music fans worldwide took notice and, almost entirely on the merit of this one breakthrough hit, bought tickets and filled venues to see Gotye perform LIVE. A gifted drummer and percussionist as well as a vocalist with impressive range, Gotye’s often times understated but always innovative music -- a mix of quirky electronic sounds and acoustic rhythms -- evokes a mood both retro and modern. Songs like “Eyes Wide Open,” Easy Way Out,” and “State of the Art” take on new dimension during his concerts which feature De Backer on drums and various other instruments, and which utilize projected images that echo the striking visual artistry of Gotye’s music videos. Although his voice has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting, his music is more inspired by Godley & Crème and DJ Shadow.

    Dreaming of seeing you

    by L. W. on 9/24/23

I know there is basically no chance you will ever see this. But I would pay such a stupid amount of money to see you in concert. If you came to the Boston Area for a random show, I can guarentee you'd have a big and amazing audience. I love your music and I wish you'd perform again. Even as an opener. I'd see any band to see you. Love you ❤️

Too popular for his own good, but for good reason

by JavaJones on 11/25/12Bill Graham Civic Auditorium - San Francisco

I first heard Gotye perhaps 4-5 years ago on Radio Paradise, an online radio station that has been responsible for introducing me to a lot of new, interesting, and lesser-known music over the years. The song most played was "Heart's A Mess" and while I really enjoyed hearing it, I didn't pursue more of his music until his single "Somebody That I Used To Know" came out this past year. I heard it before it blew up on the radio (and online) and knew then that he was someone I needed to check out more and see live if I could. By the time he came around to the Bay Area, he'd become popular enough to fill the relatively large Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and for an artist who had never toured visibly in the area, that's pretty significant. With that new-found fame came some issues however, at least for fans. The Bill Graham Civic experience was crowded and I had a fairly poor view from the floor. But even so it was a good show. It was plain to see that Wally, the front-man, is an incredible musician and vocalist, and that his song writing talent ranges much further than even the fairly disparate major singles I'd heard before, mentioned above. I had in fact already delved into the album he was touring on at the time and really enjoyed the range of material there. In this particular show he seemed to stick mostly to newer material, with a few older songs, and the fact that it was only an hour and 15 minutes (or so) probably speaks to that fact. I was disappointed in the short length of the show, I must say, but still the energy and performance on display was worth it. He has a talented band, he himself is a multi-instrumental whiz, and his unique voice has a surprising range and power to it. Definitely one of the more unique artists to go mainstream in the past 10 years. Since this show I have been to see Gotye a second time and that was even better, with a much longer set, and an incredibly choreographed projection/light show (I've already written that review). So with 2 out of 2 shows being good, I'd say odds are pretty good you'll enjoy him too.

    Excellent Concert

by BlazinBull on 10/19/12Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

This was an excellent concert. Sound was great, voice was great, instruments were great, they had everything going for them that night. Coupled together with the cool weather and chill crowd (no singing and dancing for this venue) it was wonderful. Great stage presence and superb audio engineer for this show, perfect volume level.

I thought the concert was great! I loved the videos that played, I thought the band sounded just like the recordings and getting to the see the instruments was very interesting. It also looked like Gotye was really enjoying himself too. He smiled alot and seemed to be having a great time!

    Not worth money

by MAGK on 10/13/12Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Opening act was too slow, too long. Gotye came in for the last hour by which time we were ready to go home. Total waste of money.
