First time seeing the Shelley Berg Trio, I was expecting a frustrated music dean able but inert. Boy was I wrong! What a trio. Shelley Berg's fingers are lightning fast, without being just a show-off speed show. His melodies are contagious, and his bassist and drummer complement perfectly.
The draw for most of the audience, it seemed, was the vocalist Tierney Sutton, an amiable vocalist who put together some very clever arrangements mashing up songs with different eras and styles. I regret to say, though, that her performance felt more "selling it"than singing it. The trio by itself would have been more than enough.
