THE GET UP KIDS IN CONCERT:
The Get Up Kids rose to fame in the mid-‘90s thanks to their powerful emo punk sound and adrenaline-filled live performances, and they remain just as emotionally rousing two decades later. Heavily distorted guitars, breakneck drums, and heart-on-sleeve lyrics are the order of business at any Get Up Kids show, and fans in the pit feed on the band’s infectious energy as they dance and sing along to anthems like “I’ll Catch You” and “Your Petty Pretty Things”. Frontman Matt Pryor is a commanding showman, alternating between passionate vocals and casual anecdotes delivered between songs. Whether they’re tearing through early favorites like “Ten Minutes” or performing cuts off 2011’s There Are Rules, The Get Up Kids always treat ticket buyers to enough punk energy and heartfelt sentiment to satisfy any diehard emo fan.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Get Up Kids formed in Kansas City, MO in 1995 and quickly rose to the top of the Midwest emo scene with their edgy sound and emotional lyrics. After releasing several 7” records the band made their album debut in 1997 with Four Minute Mile, a stellar first outing that garnered critical acclaim and drew them out for a European tour. Their 1999 sophomore album Something to Write Home About was an ever bigger success, wowing critics and cracking the Top 40 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. After several years of touring they returned to the studio to record 2002’s On a Wire, a more alt rock-oriented release that peaked at No. 3 on the Independent Albums charts. Their 2004 follow-up album Guilt Show also reached No. 3 on the chart, leading to a high-profile tour with emo giants Dashboard Confessional. The band went on hiatus in 2005, but reunited in 2008 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their most highly regarded album Something to Write Home About. Since then they’ve continued to tour and release music, including 2011’s popular There Are Rules.

Rating: 5 out of 5by Pivitor on 6/20/11Starland Ballroom - Sayreville Saves the Day and the Get Up Kids both put on amazing performances! The Get Up Kids were super fun to watch. They had a ton of energy, really appeared to enjoy each other's company, and filled the show with fan-favorite songs from "Something to Write Home About." However, their set suffered from constant technical difficulties, and some of their newer songs seemed to lose the audience's attention. Despite all that, though, the set was amazing. Saves the Day, in my personal opinion, was even better. Singer Chris Conley was obviously having the time of his life, and so was the crowd. He never once lost their attention, and some of the crowd even sang along to songs that haven't been released yet (songs from their upcoming album). The band crammed nearly 30 songs into 90 minutes, and played an amazing variety of songs, including B-Sides and favorites from their early albums. Overall, I don't have a single complaint about their set, it was perfect! This was probably the best concert I've ever been to.

by shinslover on 6/15/11Starland Ballroom - SayrevilleThe Get Up Kids had a rocky start due to sound control but that had nothing to do with them. Overall, TGUK were awesome! Played a variety of songs from all their albums and even had some fun doing a Blur cover. Campfire Kansas made the show for me though - all I needed to hear. Saves the Day on the other hand played way too many new songs from their newer albums. I would've preferred they played more of their old stuff from "Can't Slow Down" and "Through Being Cool" as well as more acoustic stuff considering he did have the acoustic out but only played one song (Hold - which was awesome). Chris needs to cut out the whiny voice from his newer stuff as well...

They played a really great set with a nice mix of their staple songs, new songs and old songs that I've never heard them play live before. I also loved that they encored with a Blur cover, it's nice to hear the occasional cover from bands as talented as The Get Up Kids. There is a reason I keep going to see them! Saves the Day also did amazingly well. I've been a fan for years but never had the chance to see them live and in their home state! The crowd really got into it which made it even better. Starland is a good venue because the sound is really crisp and well balanced (with the exception of the mic mishap during The Get Up Kids first song). Overall, great show, I had a blast and the energy in the room was awesome.

by CourtLeeJones on 6/10/11Crazy Donkey Bar and Grill - FarmingdaleSaves The Day put on a perfect set. Get Up Kids were definitely up to par. Not a lot of little boys and girls running around which is always a plus. I felt like it was 2003 with good pop punk!
