GABRIEL KAHANE IN CONCERT:
Gabriel Kahane combines his love of folk-pop with classically trained compositional skills to create cinematic, intricately arranged orchestral pop. In concert Kahane’s soothing, breathy vocals wring the emotion out of each brilliantly evocative word and continue to transfix audiences long after the performance is over. He builds a rapport with ticket buyers as he introduces his epic songs and tells lighthearted anecdotes between them. Touring in support of his album The Ambassador in 2014 and 2015, Kahane is bringing sophisticated and moving chamber pop to eager audiences across the country.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Gabriel Kahane, the son of composer/conductor Jeffrey Kahane, was exposed to a wide range of musical styles growing up. After studying music at the New England Conservatory and Brown University the young composer made a splash in 2006 with Craigslistlieder, a theatrical song cycle featuring lyrics from actual Craigslist posts. Since making his self-titled debut as a singer/songwriter in 2008, Kahane has spent his time working on musicals, orchestral pieces, and his own solo career. As a composer Kahane has written pieces for such noteworthy ensembles as The Kronos Quartet, The Orpehus Chamber Orchestra, and The Los Angeles Philharmonic. His 2011 album Where Are the Arms earned widespread acclaim and helped grow his fan base considerably. Kahane’s third solo album The Ambassador (2014) was adapted into a stage production by Tony winner John Tiffany, and its song “Empire Liquor Mart (9127 S. Figueroa St.)” was selected as one of NPR Music’s Favorite Songs of 2014.

Watching Gabriel Kahane with his little orchestra was breathtaking. It was a real demonstration of virtuosity and artistic expression. I can't wait to see what he does next!
One of the most memorable evenings I have spent in the theater.
I love The Ambassador. The album is a bud for which this performance was the blossom. The staging, the musicians, and of course Gabriel Kahane himself, revealed nuances and complexities of the music and lyrics I'd appreciated but not quite experienced until I saw this performance. Wonderful musicians too. I think what I really loved is that this performance was not about the performers (not even Gabriel Kahane, who instead served almost as a master of ceremonies), but about (and in service to) the music. It was as much a work of art as a concert.
This was one of the most amazing concert evenings I've ever had in Los Angeles. I hope Gabrielle Kahane tours with this piece on Los Angeles. His talent is amazing and his musicianship beyond. He's an original as is his music and the moment he began, I felt mesmerized. We had a wonderful evening and I've been listening to his cd ever since. The tunes are haunting, melodic and so beautiful, I replay the first cut over and over, The Garden. Treat yourself to his music and if you ever have the opportunity to hear him in performance, treat yourself. He is truly a brilliant artist. He comes by his talent honestly as his father is director of the LA Chamber Orchestra. I am grateful to have been in his presence for an afternoon conversation with Kristy Edmunds, the director of Center for Arts Performance at UCLA so as to hear how his does his research and how he came upon doing this project. Just masterful. Can't rave enough. Many thanks to Gabrielle for creating this piece and for his amazing artistry.
