About

This epic musical features the words of Abraham Lincoln and music inspired by the letters of those who lived through the Civil War. Through a series of highly theatrical vignettes, we see everyday Americans courageously confront the gritty realities of a tattered nation and a war that pitted brother against brother. Lincoln’s inspirational words intermix with these stories, imagining a bloody nation once again unified. Ford’s Theatre is developing this work as part of "Ford’s 150," a series of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination

    Very uplifting and emotional

by Benfleetlady on 5/29/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

A superbe portrayal of the Civil War from all points of view, Union, Confederate and Slave. The actors were all young people and were excellent in their roles, most taking on more than one role. I would thoroghly recommend this musical play but unfortunately it came to and end 2 days after we saw it as it was part of a bigger tribute to 150 years of Abe Lincoln.

Solemn and awe inspiring tribute to Lincoln

by Pteria on 5/22/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Had a wonderful time at this show. Many (if not all) of the songs used were taken from the since retired musical Civil War which I regret I never got to see in person. Music was woven into several passages from letters and speeches of President Lincoln to create a beautiful tribute to one of the darkest times in our history. Truly moving and emotional from start to finish. Bravo!!!

    Great Show

by PatriotsSon on 5/19/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

The singers were great. The coordination of the stage action was great. I enjoyed the show, however a 5 or 10 minute intermission would have been good. Also, the orchestra was too loud. The instrumentals sometimes drowned out the vocals. Instrumentation needed less amplification. Otherwise, my date and I had an outstanding time.

Freedom Sings was unbelievably moving and majestic

    by Dinky36 on 5/19/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

This play has a place in my heart being a descendant of Robert E. Lee and watching the Civil War replayed and why he surrendered made him the great man I know he was. Abe Lincoln gave his life for our country and visiting the Ford Theatre to see the artifacts from that fateful day sent shivers up our spines. How did they preserve the flag, the gun, the clothing and other artifacts from the 1800's? Amazing! The performers were incredibly talented and their voices....unbelievable! If we didn't have to leave town to come home to Cali, we would have seen the play at least one more time, if not a third time. It was that good.

    An unexpected pleasure!

by BJHJ on 5/19/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

The singing was powerful throughout the performance. This included solos as well as by the entire cast of slaves as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. Every performer had a wonderful singing voice. The staging of the military numbers was excellent. The symbolism of Lincoln's stovepipe hat, which was passed between various actors as they quoted Lincoln, was memorable. My wife and I truly enjoyed it.

    Freedom's Song was So Fun!

by MDstatetraveler on 5/18/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I loved seeing "Freedom's Song" at Ford's Theatre. I saw the musical twice during it's run, and it was worth going back the second time. The songs were so interesting for a musical about the Civil War. I loved the depictions of the troops, the wives, and the slaves (as an African American). I was so moved by this musical. While some people may find it hokey, I definitely found some power in being able to discuss issues surrounding the war in a musical style.

The Most Disappointing Part of Our Trip to DC

    by Traveler360 on 5/17/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

This performance was the biggest disappointment of our trip The actors appeared to be lip syncing. We could not understand the words, none of the songs were the least bit memorable and we were totally bored throughout the entire performance. The performances seemed to be a trap for tourists on buses.

    Simply Awesome Show

    by Yorkman999 on 5/15/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

We did not expect what we got. The show was amazing! The singing was wonderful. The script was directly from the writings and speeches of President Lincoln, and naturally was inspiring. There were about 15 young performers, each one with a Broadway quality voice that just blew us away! We had a great time!

    Freedom Song

by Grouchiesmom on 5/14/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I was a little skeptical about seeing another play in a small theater because seating is so tight, but this theater was great and the usher let us move to balcony front row were we saw this amazing show. The voices of this cast were outstanding, practically all of the cast had a bit of a solo and they were all terrific. I would highly recommend the Ford Theater and Freedom Song to anybody looking for a great evening of theater.
