Fran Healy at Bowery Ballroom...a Magical evening!

by Bamaguy006 on 12/22/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

I have seen Fran with Andy Dunlop of TRAVIS (in a very small venue), as well as TRAVIS in concert in larger ones, and must say that this evening was equal, if not better than, both (which ranked among the top 10 concerts I have ever seen among hundreds). The backup band was surprising tight for having played only a few days together, and the addition of a string quartet was especially magical. Fran was engaging, charming, and oozed talent and robust enthusiasm for sharing his music that spread to us all in the room. While he took a few requests for TRAVIS songs at the end of the set, I truly didn't want the evening to end, but surprised myself how VERY satisfied I was by simply hearing Wreckorder mostly. The evening has since made me have that album on my iTunes in repeat mode constantly for a week. I cannot overstate how positive an evening of lovely music it was, especially a holiday time in NYC, for a person who lives in Alabama now (formerly NYC) The venue was outstanding for sound as well.

    Not to be missed

by nicole1083 on 12/20/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

I bought tickets to see Fran Healy not being that familiar with his solo album, but knowing the music he had made with his band Travis ranks in my top 5 artists of all time - so had complete faith it would be an enjoyable experience. I had only a fleeting hope he would play some Travis tunes, but was just excited for the opportunity to see someone I've had such a long admiration and respect for. I was truly blown away by the entire set. He began by playing his entire solo album, which I thought translated well, and I honestly preferred to the recorded version. There was a full 4-piece band plus a 4-person string section which made for a lush, explosive live sound on even the most mellow of songs. By the time he had played through the entire album, I really couldn't have asked for a more satisfying experience - but it only got better as Fran yielded to his fans and began playing Travis requests for the next half hour or so. He finished the set in the spirit of the season with a lovely rendition of a Christmas tune. Fran's charisma on stage and ability to make an entire crowd laugh only added to the enjoyment of the show. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to see Fran Healy, who paved the way for such arena superstars as Coldplay and Keane, in such an intimate venue. I look forward to the next time he or his band Travis graces New York again!

    fran healy: amazing as usual

by soniahearttravis on 12/18/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

If you've seen Travis or Fran Healy live you know they know how to put on a show, and this was no exception. Fran played his debut solo album backed by a string quartet, a pianist, bass guitarist and drummer (all great musicians in their own right). It was an amazing experience to hear this sometimes fragile, sometimes rockin but always memorable album live in an intimate setting like the Bowery Ballroom. We had front row SRO tickets and I felt we were in the band, surrounded by music. Just couldn't have been a better concert!

It was such an amazing show. Fran was funny, his voice was amazing and the band was fluid. Bowery Ballroom was the perfect venue. I wish I could see him again!

Fran is a great all-around performer and Foley is a fine talent that needs to work on his rapport with the audience. Although understandable, I'm disappointed that Fran couldn't stay around after the performance.

Fran Healy is a master storyteller!

by Dudess on 12/11/10RED ROOM AT CAFÉ 939 - Boston

What a treat it was to see Fran Healy at the Red Room at Cafe 939. The bulk of the show was songs from his new solo CD "Wreckorder," but he also took Travis requests and did a Joni Mitchell song. Besides being an amazing songwriter and singer, what made it very special was that he prefaced each song with a story of how the song came about. The venue was perfect for the show, a small and intimate setting, and most of us were able to sit on the floor. Fran commented on how hippy-like it was, and he encouraged us to stay seated while he performed. It gave one the feel that he had come right into your own living room. If you have the chance, you must go see Fran Healy!

For a Travis fan, this concert was an unimagined dream. Fran played to a room not much larger than twice the size of my living room. He played most of the songs from his new record Wreckorder, and then took Travis requests from the audience. He was funny, passionate, and engaging as he sang his beautifually crafted songs. What a night.
