About

British-based indie rock band Foals was originally formed by Jack Bevan and Yannis Philippakis. The duo then brought in Andrew Mears, Walter Gervers and Jimmy Smith as additional members. Following the release of their first single “Try This on Your Piano” in 2006, Mears left the group to focus on his other band, Youthmovies. The remaining members of the group continued, along with new recruit, Edwin Congreave.

The group went on to release their first two major singles in 2007 with “Hummer” and “Mathletics.” Their debut album, Antidotes, was released in 2008, followed by  Total Life in 2010. Their most successful album is their 2013 release Holy Fire. They’ve also released a number of EPs from their live shows, including Live At Liars Club and two performances at the iTunes Festival in 2008 and 2010. The band also recorded and released a video of their performance at the Albert Hall.

Known for their stellar live show,  the band has undertaken a number of tours across the world. This includes dates in 2014 in the UK and Ireland, as well as a joint tour in the US with Cage the Elephant. In 2013 they played a number of festivals, including a headline slot at Latitude Festival. The band have also received critical acclaim for their performances. In 2013 they won a Q Award for Best Live Act. The group have also received two NME nominations in the same category. During their career, Foals have been nominated twice for the Mercury Music Prize, once in 2010 for the Total Life Forever album and again in 2013 for Holy Fire. In 2010 the single “Spanish Sahara” was nominated for an Ivor Novello award. This song also took the award for Best Track at the 2011 NME Awards.

The band’s influences are extremely mixed. They include the likes of Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, Harmonia and Talking Heads. Their music has been used in a number of television series, including Entourage, Misfits, Outcasts and Skins. Throughout their career, Foals have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the 9:30 Club and The Fillmore to capacity.

    The fantastic Mr. FOALS

    by Chris on 7/21/23

The band rocked!!! Not what I was expecting. There was a mosh pit...not my vibe. My daughter and I were able to avoid it and have a great time.

Love the band, venue experience was poor

by Ben on 12/21/22State Theatre - Portland

I love Foals and was excited to see them live on Dec. 18th in Portland, ME. The State Theatre was discounting for a few reasons. First the vocals were way to quiet and sound was not right. Couldn’t hear the lead singer when singing or talking to the crowd. Secondly the crowd at the state theatre and my wife and I found eachother in the middle of 10 individuals who decided to mosh and recklessly body slam everyone around them. I almost got knocked over 10 times. The people moshing were in the minority and getting dirty looks from everyone. State theatre staff did nothing to contain or stop it. These moshers pushed a non mosh participant into me and they spilled their drinks on a group of bystanders. Love the band but this venue needs a major overhaul of facilities and management controls.

    Fools for Foals

by Kevin on 12/21/22State Theatre - Portland

Foals are so good I feel like I could watch them every night. Their show was a good mixture of old and new and there was not a down minute. The State Theater venue has improved its sound system considerably over the years and the Foals took full advantage of it. The opening acts, Glove and Inner Wave were a good build up to the headliners.

    Incredible show

by D Nick on 12/21/22State Theatre - Portland

One of the best live acts I’ve caught, and the venue is perfect. Only downside was the big Ticketmaster charge, and having to negotiate their site to access tickets, rather than being able to keep them in my mail app, or just a screenshot.

    Foals never disappoint

by Velvetglitz on 12/21/22State Theatre - Portland

This was my 17th show of theirs and they still got it. They always put on an amazing show even when Yannis has no voice. Hope his vocal surgery goes well and be back performing at his peak capacity again.

    Foals are just great

by Shmerv on 12/16/22The Anthem - Washington

The Anthem is a great place to see a show. Roomy, lots of bathrooms and bars and clear sightlines everywhere. I love seeing a show at the Anthem. Foals have gotten better since the last time I saw them about 4 years ago. They have that mix of funk and heavy rock riffs that keep me dancing all night long. Can't wait to see them again.
