About

EMANUEL AND THE FEAR IN CONCERT:

Symphonic pop sextet Emanuel and the Fear draws on everything from Rachmaninoff to Bright Eyes to create their kaleidoscopic sound. Energetic frontman Emanuel Ayvas is the lightning rod for these various influences, howling his social protest lyrics while switching off between guitar and keyboards. Just as skilled at playing pop and rock as they are at country and soul, backing band the Fear keeps things swinging and tight throughout their performances with a versatile combination of strings and woodwinds. With their dynamic and moving compositions, Emanuel and the Fear promise ticket buyers an unforgettable experience as their stature in the indie music scene continues to grow.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Wood-Ridge, NJ in 1983, Emanuel Ayvas began playing piano at the age of five. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 2005, he formed the band Motion Commotion before relocating to Brooklyn. Inspired by his new surroundings he began assembling Emanuel and the Fear, which eventually ballooned into an 11-piece lineup featuring brass, strings, and woodwinds in addition to traditional rock instrumentation like drums and guitar. Their debut album Listen came out in 2010 and immediately inspired a cult following and positive reviews from tastemakers like Flavorpill and NME. Soon the band was opening for the likes of Wilco, Joanna Newsom, The War on Drugs, and Beirut while working on their 2012 album The Janus Mirror. Now pared down to a relatively small six-piece, the group continues to tour while recording material for a third album expected to be released sometime in 2015.

    Emanuel and the Fear ROCKS!!!

I became a fan of E and the Fear after I found out that Dallin Applebaum and Dan Tirer, who I knew from Ryan Star's band, played in the band. I had listened nonstop to their albums for about a month before the show and I have to say, I was beyond thrilled with the performance! Everyone was on point and played even better than on the album! Although it was the CD release show of "Hands," I was happily surprised that they played some older songs, such as "The Finale" and "Ariel and the River." They even played some new tunes that weren't on the album. Emanuel Avvayas's soulful lyrics and intricate melodies were as resonant as ever and it was great to feel the passion that all of the band members had for what they were playing. I especially enjoyed Liz Hanley's violin and vocal performances. All and all, it was an amazing show that was even better than my high expectations.
