theater: comfortable convenient; admission: a bargain!

    by M on 3/31/22Carolina Theatre - Durham

I especially loved the female lead. Her face and body language made the lyrics easier to understand. I loved the costumes, especially the red jacket worn by the Major. The Queen performed Elizabeth's wave perfectly. I was amazed by the encore's speed!

    Outstanding Production

by BonBon on 3/30/22Carolina Theatre - Durham

The Carolina Theater was welcoming with the cheerful ushers. The performers and orchestra were fabulous. I loved that the show started with the Ukrainian national anthem. And I really liked the screen with the words throughout the production!

    Not great.

    by R. P. on 3/29/22Carolina Theatre - Durham

The musical opened up with a cast member that appeared to have been around for a while and voice was not great (not the best way to open the show). There were a couple of people that did a nice job but it still felt somewhat disjointed. We left after the first act.

    Great Show

by Tammy on 4/3/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

I hadn't been to the Carolina Theater in years, and it was nice to return. I've only ever seen The Mikado done by non-professionals, as I participated through my high school chorus 30+ years ago. And this group was fabulous. Great voices, very funny...and all-around fun show. I'll look for more of their productions in the future.

    Usual grand show!

    by I. F. on 4/3/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

A lovely romp with some original tweeks. Grand costuming. The theater needs to have a concept about how to handle checking or parking walkers. Only unpleasant part of the show...

    Turning in their graves......

    by C. J. on 4/3/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

First, let me say how much I love Durham's Carolina Theater. It's beautiful. As a life long Gilbert and Sullivan fan, I must confess to being disappointed in this production. This wasn't a playful rethinking. It seemed at times to actually be making fun of this great comic opera itself. If you think this opera is ridiculous, don't put it on. Do another instead. I would have assumed that the Durham Savoyards would love G & S works, in particular, the Mikado. But the 'aesthetic' choices made demonstrate an actual distaste for the opera. I like re-imaginings of great classics. They are stimulating and demonstrate a thorough understanding and PASSION for the work. I offer the recent King Lear film and the NYMet Valkyrie production with The Machine - which supported and added to the epic nature of the piece. The choices made here for the Mikado did actual violence to the opera. The Brits dressed as Japanese sending up human foibles in general and British society in particular is central to the opera. The choice to make Pooh-bah a drawling (mostly) Southerner was very wrong. This great story did not need another story clumsily constructed onto it - the tailor bit. Why? If you loved and lived the opera, it provides great depths to explore without incongruous add-ons. This production was very, very amateurish and for lack of a better word - childish. It was an insult to the work. I could have appreciated the choices made, perhaps, if it had been a high school production. No insult intended to high school productions. But to an ensemble group dedicated to the body of work of Gilbert and Sullivan? I couldn't recommend this to anyone and don't know if I can ever summon the courage to watch another Durham Savoyard treatment of comedic genius in the clumsiest of hands!

It Looked Like a Dressed Rehearsal

by Walked Out on 4/3/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

Theatre and staff were great. However the actual performance was horrible. It was some mashed up reworked version of a classic. Wife was nearly in tears when we left. She had been looking forward to this for weeks.

    Delightful

by DvG on 4/2/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

Costumes were outrageous. The story was outrageous. the acting and voices extraordinary. It was good to read a synopsis of each act before the performance. Loved it.

    The actors/singers were excellent!

by Dr. Scott on 4/2/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

The players wetter terrific and did Gilbert & Sullivan proud. Of particular interest were the actors who played Koko and The Grand Poobah. The actor who played Yum-Yum had a wonderful voice!

    Very long but entertaining

    by A. A. on 4/1/19Carolina Theatre - Durham

It was way longer than we expected, and it took us a little while to catch on to the plot. Acting and singing was great! We liked the 2nd Act better than Act I. It just got crazier and funnier as it went on!
